About the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation

Originally inaugurated to manufacture serums and vaccines against the bubonic plague, the institution has experienced an intense trajectory that is intertwined with the very development of public health in the country.

Under the leadership of bacteriologist Oswaldo Cruz, the Institute was responsible for the sanitary reform that eradicated the bubonic plague epidemic and yellow fever from the city. It soon surpassed the limits of Rio de Janeiro, with scientific expeditions that explored the far reaches of the country. The Institute was also a key player in the creation of the National Department of Public Health, in 1920.
