New Wave Of Inflation In Venezuela Surges After Political Crisis And Sanctions. Prices Rise Every Day, Salaries Turn To Smoke And Essential Items Disappear From Tables.

In Venezuela, the biggest challenge is no longer oil. Now, what keeps millions of families awake at night is something much more basic: putting food on the table.

Inflation has surged again, and as a result, the prices of essential food items are rising almost daily. Consequently, the salary of those who work seems to vanish within hours.

The new crisis began after the political turmoil that culminated in Nicolás Maduro’s removal by a U.S. military operation. Since then, instability has pushed the country into another cycle of currency devaluation, scarcity, and loss of purchasing power.

“Prices Rise Every Day”: Routine Marked By Inflation

Nair Granado, 33, knows exactly what it means to live under the weight of inflation. A receptionist at a laboratory and mother of two, she rushed to the market as soon as she received her monthly salary of US$ 60. Even so, she knew she wouldn’t be able to fill her pantry.

“Prices rise every day,” she said. “It’s completely out of control.”

Living in a working-class neighborhood on the outskirts of Caracas, she reports that, in a recent week, she still managed to buy flour and half a dozen eggs. However, meat has become a luxury. Half a kilo costs over US$ 9, an amount that nearly doubled in a few days.

“You really need to find ways to save, to make the salary last,” she stated. “It’s getting harder to buy things.”

After more than a decade of hardships, Venezuela now faces a new chapter of uncertainty. The recent political crisis has created a shock in the economy, exacerbating exchange rate issues and pushing prices even higher.

According to research from local universities, over 70% of the population now lives in poverty. With the new surge of inflation, this reality is likely to deepen, expanding a humanitarian crisis that has already lasted for years.

Dollar Dependence Fuels Price Increases

At the core of the problem is the strong dependence on the U.S. dollar. Although Venezuela is not officially dollarized, the currency is widely used in everyday transactions due to its stability compared to the Bolívar.

When the economy collapsed in 2019, after years of mismanagement and international sanctions, Venezuelans began to save, buy, and sell in dollars. Merchants, in turn, adjust prices based on the currency exchange and charge even more if payment is made in Bolívars.

Additionally, new sanctions have reduced oil exports, decreasing the inflow of dollars into the country. With less foreign currency in circulation, the dollar has rapidly appreciated, pushing the prices of basic items higher.

Parallel Dollar Soars And Salaries “Turn To Smoke”

The Central Bank sets an official rate, but most people use the parallel dollar, which reflects the real value on the streets. Recently, this rate reached double the official rate.

According to economist José Guerra, the income of those who receive Bolívars has simply “turned to smoke” with the devaluation. He warns that inflation could reach 2,000% this year.

“So we have a case of an economy facing extremely high inflation and, at the same time, could be entering a recession,” he stated.

Johana Paredes, 30, lives with her family in Los Teques. Accustomed to rationing, she says that now even the basics are impossible to buy.

“Last week, we couldn’t make any purchases,” she said. “That’s why there aren’t even potatoes.”

While leaders discuss agreements and promises of recovery, millions continue to struggle to survive amidst inflation.

Here in Brazil, have you ever been through something similar? The feeling of seeing your salary “disappear” because of inflation, having to give up basic things in your daily life.

Engraçado. A hiperinflação assolava o Brasil durante s **** militar com a direita no poder absoluto. Sarney. Collor.
