The creator of Star Wars built an almost unbelievably large film complex in California: the Skywalker Ranch, a property of 4,700 acres, equivalent to about 1,902 hectares, located in Marin County, north of San Francisco. The site functions as a creative retreat, headquarters for operations related to Lucasfilm and home to Skywalker Sound, one of the most well-known audio post-production facilities in the film industry. Lucasfilm states that the ranch is about 40 minutes north of San Francisco and houses the Technical Building of 153,000 sq ft, approximately 14,214 m².
The main house, completed in 1985, is 50,000 sq ft, about 4,645 m², and includes George Lucas’s office, research library, music room, 35-seat cinema, and solarium.

One of the most impressive spaces on the ranch is the Lucasfilm Research Library. Architectural Digest reports that the library houses over 27,000 titles and is covered by a stained glass dome.
People states that the library is operated by four reference librarians and gathers collections purchased by Lucas from studios like Paramount and Universal.
The library’s function is not just decorative. Skywalker Sound describes the space as a research department used in film, television, and theater productions, with books, periodicals, and image archives to support directors, costume designers, set designers, makeup artists, and creative teams.

This building includes a world-class recording stage, six feature mixing rooms, 15 sound design suites, 50 editing rooms, an ADR stage, two Foley stages, and the Stag Theater, with 300 seats.

The structure includes breakfast, internal restaurants, gym, heated pool of 75 by 25 feet, racquetball and volleyball court, half basketball court, handball, aerobics room, and bicycles for circulating the campus.
The property also has a vineyard of 26 acres, about 10.5 hectares, an olive grove of 7 acres, organic gardens, beehives, domestic animals, and the Lake Ewok, mentioned by Lucasfilm as one of the ranch’s landmarks.
Observatory, auxiliary buildings, and screening rooms reinforce the scale of a private campus
In addition to the main house and the technical building, Skywalker Ranch has auxiliary structures like Brook House, Carriage House, and Gate House, used as production offices for filmmakers and producers. Skywalker Sound states that each of these buildings has its own theater for screenings and reviews.
The ranch also has an observatory for astronomical observation, reinforcing the blend of science, imagination, rural isolation, and cinematic culture.
According to Architectural Digest, the site operated as a “world within a world,” with about 250 employees, three restaurants, health club, organic garden, animals, and facilities to host directors and producers connected to sound and post-production studios.
