From Dismantling to Recycling, Petrobras’ P-32 Platform Arrives in Rio Grande for Sustainable Transformation and Generation of Hundreds of Jobs
The arrival of the P-32 offshore platform at the Ecovix shipyard in Rio Grande marks not only the end of its journey in the Campos Basin but also the beginning of a new phase for the region’s naval hub. Acquired at auction by Gerdau, the platform will not only be deactivated but recycled to become raw material in steel production, according to the Gauchazh website.
This innovative process from Petrobras not only puts the former naval hub back in the game but also promises to generate 200 jobs and contribute to a more sustainable model for disposing of maritime structures.
Green Recycling: Gerdau and Petrobras Align with a Sustainable Vision for Decommissioned Platforms
The initiative, dubbed “green recycling” by Petrobras, represents a joint effort to give an environmentally responsible destination to decommissioned platforms. This approach not only addresses the challenges of the oil industry after Lava-Jato but also aligns with growing environmental concerns.

Jobs and Development: Rio Grande Welcomes Platform and Prospects for Its Naval Hub
Despite the challenges faced by the naval hub of Rio Grande, the arrival of Petrobras’ P-32 platform and the impending P-33 for recycling bring hope. The dismantling of these platforms represents not only the occupation of an idle structure but also the chance to revitalize the region. Even as the union celebrates the jobs generated, there is hope that more opportunities may arise as new projects, such as those anticipated in PAC 3, come to fruition.
In this context, Gerdau highlights its ongoing interest in participating in future Petrobras auctions, signaling not only a commitment to sustainability but also the recognition of the potential of these structures as valuable sources of raw material. The Ecovix shipyard, while viewing dismantling as a secondary activity, envisions new opportunities, indicating a possible revival for the naval sector in Rio Grande, with job generation from the Petrobras platform.
As the platforms are transformed into scrap to feed the steel industry, the story of these maritime structures gains a new chapter, this time focused on sustainability, job creation, and the rebirth of the naval hub of Rio Grande.
