Brazilian Government Seeks to Monitor Minors’ Access to Social Media and Develops App

Ministry of Justice Presents Age Verification App to Protect Children and Adolescents in the Digital Environment as Part of the “Growing in Peace” Strategy

The Ministry of Justice announced the development of an app to control minors’ access to inappropriate content on social media. This measure is part of the “Growing in Peace” strategy launched in early April.

The app will work through tokens generated for each registered minor. These tokens will be used for registering on social networks and online platforms as a form of age verification.

The intention is to prevent children and adolescents from accessing inappropriate content such as pornography and websites selling alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, and vapes.

According to the Secretary of Digital Rights from the Ministry of Justice, Lílian Cintra de Melo, the main idea is to protect minors. In an interview with g1, she explained that the goal is to ensure the safety of children and adolescents in the digital environment.

The major challenge, however, is gaining the commitment of big techs like TikTok and Facebook for the implementation of the tool.

The government clarified that the use of the app will not be mandatory. The tool will be offered as an option for parents and guardians to monitor and limit minors’ content consumption on the internet.

The initiative is part of a broader plan that includes 45 actions aimed at protecting children and adolescents. According to Agência Gov, the actions seek to prevent violence, support and recover victims, and facilitate access to justice.

The Minister of Justice, Ricardo Lewandowski, highlighted the importance of social mobilization for the success of the project. He stated that the construction of this strategy is a direct result of popular participation, an element that the government hopes to see grow even more.
