Free Tickets Will Be Distributed Among Cathay Pacific, HK Express, and Hongkong Airlines
The Hong Kong government announced its plan for the distribution of 500,000 free air tickets through a lottery. Ongoing for over two years, this plan aims to revitalize its tourism industry and attract visitors back to the city. The tickets will be distributed among the three airlines in the city: Cathay Pacific, HK Express, and Hongkong Airlines. In total, the 500,000 tickets cost the city about US$ 254.8 million.
Government Aims to Recover Tourism After Pandemic
According to CNN, Hong Kong received 56 million visitors per year before the pandemic. In 2022, that number dropped to about 100,000 tourists. And it wasn’t just foreign tourism that declined: the financial center experienced its largest population drop since 1961, with a reduction of 1.6%. Additionally, traveling in and out of Hong Kong was quite difficult and expensive during the pandemic.
With up to 21 days of isolation, the strict quarantines and requirements for various molecular diagnostic testing (PCR) kept most travelers away. These quarantines were offered in hotels and paid for by travelers. Upon arrival, those who tested positive for Covid-19 were taken to government facilities. To make matters worse, entry into the city was restricted to Hong Kong residents.
