A Group Of Metalworkers From Rio Grande Are “Calling” For Help To Reactivate Shipyards And Generate Jobs In The Region. Know More
The metalworkers from Rio Grande (RS) are facing difficulties due to the lack of work and contracts at the shipyards in the region. In an open letter to President Lula, the Metalworkers Union of Rio Grande and São José do Norte (Stimmmerg) is asking for help to reactivate the shipyards and generate jobs, according to the website Petronotícias.
Since Operation Car Wash in 2014, the shipyards in Rio Grande have been experiencing a decline in activities. With the lack of new contracts, the city suffers from the reduction in commerce, transportation, and security. Currently, three shipyards in the region are practically idle, directly impacting the local economy.

“The Lula Government is characterized by generating jobs and income, by better salaries and the creation of opportunities for all, and notes that today, after having built oil platforms with the same competence as anywhere else on the planet and even having repaired vessels that came with defects from Asian shipyards, we are living in want and uncertainty regarding new projects. We have a shipyard in São José do Norte about to end a contract with no prospect of another, while in the city of Rio Grande, the shipyard with great potential, which has the largest dry dock in Latin America, is surviving on small repairs, with no prospects of any contract.
Help us, Mr. President! The metalworking category places a lot of hope in your government. We will never forget that during the PT era we had up to 24,000 workers in the Naval Hub, which represented a period of development that benefited the whole community in the region. The Brazilian naval industry has already proven its capacity. We can build any type of ship, even for the Brazilian Navy, such as the nuclear submarine.
The revitalization of the naval sector will speed up regional development, in the South, Southeast, and Northeast of the Country, as it did during your past governments. Just bring back the contracts that are currently being sent abroad. We request measures in this regard and thank you in advance for your attention and effort to address our request. The metalworking class and Brazil trust you, Sir.”
Expectations And Thankfulness
The metalworkers place their hope in the government and remember the period of development that the region experienced during the PT governments, with up to 24,000 workers in the Naval Hub. Furthermore, the metalworkers emphasize the capacity of the Brazilian naval industry and ask that contracts currently sent abroad be brought back to Brazil. The metalworking class and Brazil trust President Lula to help reactivate the naval sector of Rio Grande and boost the local economy.
