In Constant Legal Fight Since 2017, Caoa Group Won Against Hyundai and There Is a Possibility of New Cars from the Brand Coming to the National Automotive Market, Such as the New Elantra, Tucson, and Santa Cruz
Hyundai and Caoa have been fighting since 2017 in court for the right to produce vehicles of the South Korean brand in the Brazilian automotive market. The case reached the arbitration court of the International Chamber of Commerce, in Frankfurt, Germany. The court’s decision was favorable to Caoa and does not allow for an appeal.

The contract provided for an instant renewal for another 10 years; however, Hyundai offered a two-year renewal option, and some court orders have already guaranteed Hyundai Caoa’s operations in recent years.
Thus, Caoa is completely free to make investments in production and imports in the local automotive market for a few more years safely. Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Brasil, which is controlled by the parent company, will continue with the national production of Creta and HB20.

Hyundai Takes a Back Seat
Hyundai has been in the background within Caoa since the winner took over the operation of Chery in Brazil. It is noticeable that the line of passenger cars in the current automotive market consists of the iX35 and Tucson, which have already undergone a new generation abroad without any redesign.
Both vehicles are assembled in Brazil, while the Azera is the only imported model, as its stock of Santa Fe has run out. Caoa also assembles two trucks from the brand at its facility in Anápolis (GO).
The brand’s cars have become a far cry from what Hyundai experienced in the mid-2009s, when the first generation of Tucson became popular, helping to create models like Santa Fe, Azera, and Vera Cruz, which were highly coveted in the country. However, the “great attention” may have been the i30, which once became the best-selling compact hatchback in the Brazilian automotive market when the sector was very relevant.
New Hyundai Cars in the National Automotive Market
Caoa and Hyundai have been linked since the late 1990s, and the interest of the South Korean company is to explore the possibility of importing its vehicles without an intermediary, even reaching to import some recent cars.
The news may include the new Elantra, the Santa Cruz pickup, and the new generation of the Tucson, formalizing the entry of the new design language of the brand. It is worth noting that Caoa also stated that it will not comment on the arbitration court’s decision.
