The Rise Of Green Hydrogen In The Global Energy Transition
The global emergency caused by global warming, a central theme at the recent COP28 in Dubai, highlighted the need for economic decarbonization. In this context, green hydrogen, produced from renewable energy sources, has emerged as a crucial sustainable vector in low or zero carbon emission pathways.
Brazilian Highlights In Green Hydrogen Development
Daniel Cantane, manager of the Hydrogen Technology Center (TH.DT) at the Itaipu Technological Park (PTI-BR), was a prominent figure at the Panel Discussion “Developing Commercially Viable Hydrogen Projects on The Continent,” held in Santiago, Chile. This session was part of the World Hydrogen Latin America (HW LATAM), a three-day gathering that brought together authorities, investors, and researchers to discuss the Hydrogen Value Chain and production opportunities at scale in Latin America.
Innovations And Strategies At PTI-BR
In his presentation, Cantane shared the lessons learned from over a decade of hydrogen projects at PTI, supported by Itaipu Binational. He highlighted the Park as an innovation epicenter for hydrogen in Brazil and Latin America. Cantane also emphasized the promising pathways for decarbonization of industrial production, including the development of advanced fuels such as e-methanol and e-gasoline, and strategic studies for the urban mobility sector. These include the electrification of public transport systems and logistical equipment in ports, using green hydrogen.

“Our expertise with green hydrogen produced by electrolysis at scale allows us to enhance our decarbonized electric asset by combining it with carbon from biomass waste, aiming for sustainable and carbon-neutral industrial development,” Daniel emphasized. He also highlighted positive outcomes for the PTI-BR brand in Latin America, especially with the creation of the Center of Excellence in Hydrogen Technologies, focused on developing the chain and training human resources.
The Role Of Brazil In Green Hydrogen Production
The event was considered strategic for the sector, providing networking opportunities regarding hydrogen. Experts see hydrogen as a vital cog in the global energy and ecological transition, with Brazil positioned to become a leader in the production of green hydrogen, a substance with zero carbon emissions.
Hydrogen Technology Center At PTI-BR
Located at the Itaipu Technological Park (PTI-BR) in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, the Hydrogen Technology Center is an integral part of the Directorate of Technologies (DT). It is responsible for developing technical and technological solutions and services in hydrogen production plants, encompassing operation, maintenance, and control, as well as developing national solutions for hydrogen conversion, storage, and application in industrial and mobility solutions. This center plays a crucial role at the forefront of innovation in green hydrogen in Brazil, significantly contributing to the efforts of decarbonization and to the country’s sustainable energy transition.
