According to the Federation of Industries of the State of Santa Catarina (Fiesc), the state needs to invest R$ 18.4 billion in its transportation infrastructure in SC from 2023 to 2026 to meet sufficient standards to ensure the safety and efficiency of the system.
These data on SC transportation infrastructure are part of the strategic agenda of the Santa Catarina transportation and logistics industry. The study considered all modes of transportation and areas of government, as well as the private sector.
SC transportation infrastructure takes into account all types of roads. The agenda considers the need for federal investments (R$ 5.43 billion), state (R$ 7.54 billion), municipal (R$ 241 million), and private (R$ 5.2 billion) investments. Regarding the modality, the identified need is R$ 14.5 billion for highways – maintenance and upkeep; duplication and capacity enhancement.
Of the amount needed for the roadway model, for the BR, Fiesc advocates that the ideal investment is R$ 400 million (at least R$ 250 million). For national roads, the proposed amount is R$ 200 million (at least R$ 120 million). In the waterway segment (including ports), R$ 1.72 billion; in the rail segment, R$ 985 million; in aviation, R$ 695 million; in pipeline systems, R$ 510 million. The president of Fiesc spoke about the importance of investing.

Competitiveness
To improve the transportation infrastructure in SC, investment in infrastructure offsets with increased taxes. This should be a national policy. Therefore, we seek to broaden the debate among federal judges and executive branch agencies. Brazil’s competitiveness ranks only 59th among 63 countries. In infrastructure, Brazil ranks 53rd among 63 countries.
The state of Santa Catarina ranks 19th in Brazil in road quality, second in the number of accidents, second in the number of accidents with victims, and fourth in deaths. From 2011 to 2021, there were 142,100 accidents and 5,000 deaths on Santa Catarina’s federal highways.
About 68% of Santa Catarina’s highways were classified as poor, bad, or regular, clearly indicating the need for improvements in SC transportation infrastructure. The same survey classified the section of BR-163 in Santa Catarina as the worst federal highway in Brazil. It was considered very bad in three groups of characteristics analyzed by the study: pavement condition, road condition, and clarity of signage and road geometry.
