Argentine government formalizes bidding result and retains company operating since 1995 on the country’s main agricultural export route, while the sector monitors possible impacts on transportation costs and regional trade
Argentina has taken another important step for the future of logistics and waterway transportation in South America. Last Thursday, June 4, 2026, the Argentine government confirmed the result of the bidding responsible for the dredging and maintenance of the Paraná River waterway, one of the most important cargo transport routes on the continent.
The information was released by the portal Portos e Navios, based on data from the Ministry of Economy of Argentina. According to the government, the Belgian company Jan de Nul was declared the winner of the bidding process and will continue to be responsible for essential services on the waterway, including dredging, maintenance, and improvement of navigability conditions.
The decision reinforces the continuity of an operation that has been ongoing for decades. After all, Jan de Nul has been operating on the Paraná River waterway since 1995, accumulating experience on a route considered strategic for Argentine foreign trade and for several countries in the region.

Jan de Nul wins dispute and expands presence on the Paraná River waterway
According to the Argentine Ministry of Economy, the Belgian company presented the winning proposal to manage fundamental services in the bidded section.
However, the process is not yet fully concluded. This is because the company DEME NV, also from Belgium and the runner-up in the competition, still has time to present any appeals or questions about the result.
On the other hand, the Brazilian company DTA Engenharia did not advance to the final phase of the analysis. As informed by the Argentine authorities , the company was left out of the decisive stage due to issues related to the requirements set out in the bidding notice.
With the winner defined, the Argentine government’s expectation is to ensure more operational efficiency on the waterway, as well as to strengthen the competitiveness of the river transport system.
Furthermore, the continuity of investments in dredging and maintenance is expected to contribute to increasing navigation safety and improving the flow of vessels that use the route daily.
Tendered section is crucial for the flow of agricultural production
The concession covers the section of the Paraná River located between the mouth of the Paraguay River and the Rosario region, a route that is entirely situated in Argentine territory.
This area has enormous economic relevance. After all, the waterway corridor concentrates a large part of the transport of agricultural commodities produced in Argentina, especially grains destined for export.
According to the Argentine government, the new contract will allow for reduced operational costs, increased navigability, and improved logistical efficiency of the waterway. As a result, there is an expectation of reduced tariffs and greater competitiveness for producers and exporters.
Furthermore, the modernization of the infrastructure could favor an increase in cargo transport capacity, further strengthening the strategic role of the waterway for the national economy.
Meanwhile, companies in the sector are closely monitoring the developments of the concession, as the route directly influences the dynamics of regional trade.
Waterway benefits Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia, and Uruguay
The importance of the Paraná River waterway goes far beyond Argentine borders. In practice, the waterway system formed by the Paraná, Paraguay, and Uruguay rivers, with an outlet in the Rio de la Plata, serves several South American countries.
The Paraguay, for example, uses the waterway intensively to export its agricultural production and import essential inputs, such as fuels.
Similarly, Brazilian, Bolivian, and Uruguayan companies also depend on the structure to move goods and reduce logistical costs.
Another important advantage is the efficiency of river transport. Vessels can transport large volumes of cargo in a single trip, which significantly reduces costs compared to road transport.
Therefore, experts consider the Paraná River waterway one of the main logistical corridors on the continent. Besides boosting exports, it helps integrate markets and strengthen the competitiveness of countries in the region.
In this scenario, the confirmation of Jan de Nul as the operator of the waterway represents a significant decision for the future of South American river transport. At the same time, the sector is watching the next steps of the contract and the possible impacts on cargo movement, logistical costs, and international trade over the coming years.
