Seatrium Celebrated The First Milestone In Steel Manufacturing For The Construction Of The New FPU For Shell’s Project In The Gulf Of Mexico.
The Seatrium project in Singapore, formerly known as Sembcorp Marine, is progressing with the steel manufacturing for the construction of a new Semi-Submersible Production Unit (FPU), which will be used in the deep-water development sanctioned by Shell in the Gulf of Mexico, USA.
The start of the construction phase comes weeks after the confirmation of a contract for the construction and integration of the hull, topsides, and accommodations of the floating production unit Sparta FPU – featuring a single topside module supported by a semi-submersible four-column floating hull – and follows the letter of intent dated August 28, 2023. The final investment decision for the project was made in December 2023.

FPU Sparta: An Approximate Replica Focused On Minimizing Carbon Footprint
The FPU Sparta will replicate about 95% of the hull of the Whale FPU and 85% of its topside. The Floating Production and Storage Unit (FPU) Sparta, previously known as North Platte, is a deep-water venture in the Gulf of Mexico, USA, measuring 1,310 meters (4,300 square feet). Discovered in 2012 by Cobalt International Energy, the Sparta field is currently operated by Shell Offshore (51%) with Equinor Gulf of Mexico LLC (49%) as the major oil company’s partner.

The steel strike ceremony marks the beginning of the Sparta project at our steel manufacturing unit, powered by renewable solar energy. This execution aligns with our 2030 Sustainability Vision, focusing on operational minimization of our carbon footprint and contributing to the industry’s decarbonization efforts, Seatrium highlighted.
Development Plan And Projected Capacity Of The FPU Sparta
The development plan of the project covers eight production wells linked to a semi-submersible Floating Production Unit (FPU). With an estimated and discovered recoverable resources volume of 244 million boe and a projected capacity of 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day at peak, the FPU Sparta will feature fully electric compression equipment, allowing for significantly reduced emissions intensity from production.
Secure And Efficient Replication Of The FPU Sparta
The FPU Sparta, an approximate replica of its predecessors, the FPUs Shell Vito and Whale, will leverage operational synergies by replicating safe and efficient commissioning onshore before the method of single lift integration for the topsides. When completed, Sparta will be located in the Garden Banks area in the Gulf of Mexico, USA, and is expected to produce 90,000 boe/d. We are very excited about the successful delivery of the Sparta FPU, Seatrium explained.
Upon completion, the FPU Sparta will be located in the Garden Banks area in the Gulf of Mexico, USA, approximately 275 kilometers (171 miles) off the Louisiana coast. The project is set to begin production in 2028.
Seatrium Won Several Businesses In 2023 Related To Topside Module Manufacturing
Seatrium won several contracts in 2023. One of the latest was closed with Offshore Frontier Solutions Pte Ltd, a company of the MODEC Group, for topside module manufacturing work related to the FPSO Raia in Brazil.
