Chinese Researchers Discover New Mineral Called Niobobaotite That Promises to Revolutionize Battery Production With Up to 3x More Lifespan.
Chinese researchers have made a significant discovery in the field of mining, identifying an innovative mineral called niobobaotite. Composed of elements such as barium, niobium, iron, titanium, and chlorine, the mineral exhibits potentially revolutionary properties for electric vehicle batteries.
Niobium, a key component of this new mineral, is a metal valued for its multiple applications, including the production of special alloys used in the manufacture of parts for jet engines and rockets.
Importance of Niobobaotite Discovered in China
The material is considered essential in semiconductors and is extensively used in medical diagnostic areas, such as magnetic resonance imaging devices. The researchers responsible for the discovery state that it is an important step for China, as the country currently imports 95% of its niobium needs niobium.

With this new mineral, China could become self-sufficient in this essential resource for the steel industry, they claim. Niobobaotite was found within the iron ore of rare earth niobium in the Bayan Obo mining district in Inner Mongolia (China).
According to the South China Morning Post, the team responsible for the find had previously led the discovery of another 11 minerals, demonstrating ongoing progress in mineral research. Furthermore, the Chinese team reported that the new mineral is already classified by the Commission of New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification.
These discoveries have the potential to drive significant advancements in the fields of industry, technology, and mineral research, not only in China but also globally. The increased production of niobium and the possibility of new materials from these minerals could positively impact various sectors, including the development of more efficient and sustainable electric vehicle batteries.
New Material Is a Superconductor
The niobium present in the mineral is a strong, silvery metal used in alloys for the production of parts for jet engines and rockets, and also serves as an essential component in semiconductors. It is found abundantly mainly in Brazil and Canada. About 85% to 90% of the niobium in the world is used for the production of iron and steel, which, in turn, can increase their strength by over 30% by adding 0.03% to 0.05% of niobium.
According to the Chinese researchers responsible for the discovery, niobium is a superconductor with exceptional current-conducting properties at low temperatures. It is also extensively used in medical diagnostic areas, such as in magnetic resonance imaging devices and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers.
Other Material Discovered
In addition to Niobobaotita, which can contribute to electric car batteries, cobalt has increasingly drawn interest due to a set of characteristics that, when combined with other minerals used in device production, such as lithium and nickel, make it the perfect metal.
Currently, the demand for strategic minerals is ever more evident, and among them, Blue Gold has emerged as an essential component in various industries, from electronics to renewable energy.
Cobalt stands out as a multifunctional metal, indispensable for various industries. Looking at its applications, it is clear that it is present in numerous fields of technology and science. One of its main uses is in lithium-ion batteries. It plays a crucial role in rechargeable batteries, making them more efficient and reliable. Furthermore, cobalt is essential in generating high-strength permanent magnets, vital in electric motors and generators.
