Special Retirement at 55: Who Is Eligible?
Special retirement at 55 is intended for professionals who work in health-risk conditions. This includes unhealthy activities, where workers are exposed to factors such as dust, noise, or chemical agents.
The purpose of this rule is to ensure an early retirement, acknowledging the impact that these activities have on the worker’s health.
According to the National Social Security Institute (INSS), some specific professions qualify for this special retirement. Among them are:
- Jackhammer Operator
- Rock Transporter
- Excavator
- Coal Mine Worker
- Underground Miners
- Tunnel Jackhammer Operator
- Cave Rock Driller
These activities are considered high-risk, which justifies early retirement for those who dedicate part of their lives to these roles.
For workers in these professions, the rules vary according to when they started contributing to the INSS.
Rules for Those Who Started Working Before the 2019 Reform
Those who were already in the labor market before the social security reform in November 2019 can retire earlier through the transition rules.
According to the current regulations, these workers must meet the following requirements:
- 15 years of special activity, meaning in risk conditions;
- Accumulate 66 points, considering age and years of special activity.
In this modality, there is no minimum age. The points are calculated by adding the worker’s age to their contribution time in risk activities.
In other words, the longer the time working in unhealthy conditions, the earlier it is possible to retire.
Rules for Those Who Started Working After the 2019 Reform
For those who began contributing after the November 2019 reform, the rules are slightly more rigid. Workers in high-risk activities need to:
- 15 years of special activity;
- Be at least 55 years old.
This change aims to balance the social security system, but still recognizes the severity of unhealthy activities and their long-term impact on health.
Teachers Can Also Retire at 55
Another group that can retire at 55 are teachers. However, to do so, they must meet specific transition rules and have started their social security contributions before November 2019. These rules are more lenient for teachers, considering the essential role they play in education.
According to the current legislation, teachers who wish to retire at 55 must meet one of the following criteria:
1st Rule: Minimum Points Requirement
- For Women (Female Teachers): 25 years of contribution and a minimum score of 86 points in 2024 (adding age and contribution time).
- For Men (Male Teachers): 30 years of contribution and a minimum score of 96 points in 2024.
The minimum score increases each year, until reaching 92 points for women and 100 points for men.
2nd Rule: Minimum Age Requirement
- For Women (Female Teachers): 25 years of contribution and a minimum age of 53 years and 6 months in 2024.
- For Men (Male Teachers): 30 years of contribution and a minimum age of 58 years and 6 months in 2024.
These minimum ages increase 6 months per year, until reaching 57 years for women and 60 years for men. Additionally, both sexes must have 180 contributions, corresponding to 15 years of work.
3rd Rule: 100% Bridge Requirement
In this modality, teachers must work an additional period corresponding to the time that was missing, in November 2019, to complete the minimum contribution time:
- For Women (Female Teachers): 25 years of contribution and a minimum age of 52 years.
- For Men (Male Teachers): 30 years of contribution and a minimum age of 55 years.
