Investment in New Factory in Paraíba Generates More Than 200 Jobs, Boosts Regional Development and Strengthens the Sugar and Ethanol Sector to Meet Domestic and Export Markets.
The Olho D’Água Group, one of the main names in the sugar and ethanol sector in Brazil, inaugurated a new factory in Pedras de Fogo, a municipality located 50 km from João Pessoa, in Paraíba. The sugar mill, which represents an investment of R$150 million, created 418 direct jobs during its construction and now creates 203 permanent job positions for the operation of the unit.
With the inauguration, marked by a special event on November 22, the group reaffirms its commitment to regional development and the diversification of its production to serve both the domestic market and the export market.
Project Details and Production Capacity of the New Factory of the Olho D’Água Group
The new factory, installed at Fazenda Ibura, is operated by Usina Giasa Ltda., which belongs to the Olho D’Água Group. Completed in September, after nine months of construction, the unit has a milling capacity of 320 tons of sugarcane per hour, totaling 1.4 million tons per harvest.

While tons of grape pomace are discarded in Brazilian wineries, researchers are transforming grape residues into bricks and adobe that reduce waste, improve thermal insulation, and pave the way for large-scale sustainable construction.
-
Used jeans are shredded and transformed into insulation blankets for walls and ceilings, rescuing millions of dollars of textile waste from landfills, increasing comfort in construction, and reducing heating and cooling costs.
In addition to sugar production, the new factory uses the residual molasses from the cane to produce ethanol, achieving an estimated production of:
- 2.8 million bags of sugar per harvest.
- 16.8 million liters of alcohol per harvest.
This diversification allows greater flexibility in the unit’s operation, ensuring responsiveness to market demand and price fluctuations.
Olho D’Água Group Sugar Mill Creates 203 Permanent Job Positions With The Start Of Operations
The investment of R$150 million in the new factory made a significant economic impact in the region. During the construction phase, 418 people were directly employed, moving the local economy. Now, with the commencement of operations, the factory creates 203 permanent job positions, promoting the socioeconomic development of Pedras de Fogo and neighboring municipalities.
The creation of job positions is one of the main benefits of the project, contributing to the strengthening of the local economy and improving the quality of life for nearby communities.
From Ethanol Production to Diversification with Sugar
Usina Giasa Ltda. has a long history in the sugar and ethanol sector, being a pioneer as an independent distillery in Brazil. Until September 2024, its operations were focused exclusively on ethanol production. The inauguration of the new sugar unit marks a new phase for the company, expanding its product portfolio and increasing its competitiveness in the market.
With this diversification, the Olho D’Água Group seeks to serve both the domestic market and exports, adjusting to market demands and strengthening its position in the sector.
In addition to Giasa, the group has two other mills in operation, Central Olho D’Água, in Camutanga, Pernambuco, and Comvap, located in União, Piauí. These units complement the Olho D’Água Group’s strategy to establish itself as a reference in the sugar and ethanol sector, combining tradition and innovation.
Expansion and Sustainability in the New Factory
The new mill reflects not only the pursuit of economic growth but also the Olho D’Água Group’s concern for sustainable practices. The production of ethanol from the residual molasses of the cane is an example of how the company maximizes resource utilization, contributing to waste reduction and the expansion of renewable energy sources. The group is aligned with global sustainability trends, a growing demand in both domestic and foreign markets.
The diversification of production represents a fundamental strategy for the Olho D’Água Group in a scenario of fierce competition and price fluctuations in the sugar and ethanol sector. With the new unit, the group is prepared to meet varied demands and explore new export opportunities.
Expectations are positive, both regarding the economic impact of the unit and its role in strengthening the sugar and ethanol production chain in the region.
