Recent Information Indicates That U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump Is Considering Imposing Economic Sanctions on Brazil.
Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) provided an explanation to Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) last Monday (13) regarding the invitation he received for the inauguration of the President-Elect of the United States, Donald Trump.
Bolsonaro stated that he received an email from the event’s ceremonial, which he considered to be the “official invitation“. The inauguration is scheduled for January 20 in Washington.
However, Bolsonaro’s situation is delicate. With his passport held by a court order, the former president needs authorization from the STF to travel abroad. Alexandre de Moraes, before making any decisions, requested concrete evidence that Bolsonaro is indeed on the guest list.

The rural caucus is advancing in Congress to try to block the use of Ibama satellites in remote embargoes, targeting a system that identifies illegal deforestation in real time and jeopardizing one of the most efficient tools used by the government to block devastated areas in the Amazon, prevent access to rural credit, halt deals with meatpackers, and curb the advance of environmental destruction across thousands of hectares.
In his ruling, Moraes highlighted the lack of information in the document presented. “The message was sent to Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro’s email from an unidentified address (…) and without any time or schedule for the event to be held,” pointed out the minister.
Relations Between Trump and Bolsonaro on the Radar
Meanwhile, sources close to Donald Trump’s administration have expressed concern about the developments of the situation. According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the Brazilian government’s stance toward Bolsonaro could impact relations with the Trump administration, which is already facing tensions with left-leaning governments.
Members of Trump’s team believe that the impediment of Bolsonaro traveling to the inauguration could be interpreted as a “legal setup” similar to what Trump claims to be facing in the United States. “The worst way for Lula’s government to start its relationship with the Trump administration is to use state apparatus against its political rivals“, said a source close to the President-Elect.
Possible Sanctions on the Horizon
The WSJ also reported that Trump is considering implementing trade tariffs against Brazil, as well as other countries that, in his view, use “lawfare” practices – a term that refers to the use of legal instruments to target political adversaries.
The diplomatic tension arises at a tumultuous time, where internal political issues in Brazil and the United States end up reverberating internationally.
Bolsonaro, for his part, continues to await a decision from the STF that could determine whether he will be present at the event.
