Major vehicle companies are heavily investing in the production of electric models. One of them is Volkswagen, which surpassed Tesla and regained the lead in sales in the German market in the first seven months of the year.
The result was boosted by the overwhelming success of the VW Electric Kombi, the new electric van inspired by the classic Kombi.
Volkswagen Electric Kombi Has Over 2,800 Units Sold
In addition to Tesla, billionaire Elon Musk, Volkswagen has left behind giant automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. According to data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority of Germany, 41,475 electric vehicles were sold by VW until July in the country, compared to 40,289 units from Tesla.

The two were well ahead of the third place, Mercedes-Benz, with 20,613 registrations in the same period, according to data from InsideEVs. Audi and BMW followed, with 16,786 and 15,987 electric models sold, respectively. Hyundai ranks sixth, with 15,411 registrations.
The major asset of Volkswagen to surpass Tesla was its VW Kombi. In total, 2,815 units of the Volkswagen Electric Kombi were sold in Germany in the first seven months, including 536 just in July.
This total represents 7% of the sales of electric models from the German automaker. In relation to Tesla, the Model Y accounted for almost 75% of sales, that is, 28,829 units in seven months. The Model 3 comes right behind, with 9,045 registrations, while the Model S and Model X lag far behind, with 855 and 494 sales, respectively.
Volkswagen Delivers New Version of the VW Kombi
In total, there were 268,926 registrations of electric vehicless in Germany between January and July of this year. The numbers confirm the upward trend of this new market, but still fall below the sales of internal combustion engine models, which totaled 1.64 million in the same period. In March, Volkswagen announced it would bring a new version of the VW Kombi, which surpassed Tesla in sales.
It has not yet been confirmed by the company how much larger the new version will be. However, there is data suggesting it will be almost 30 additional centimeters, which may not seem like much on paper, but makes a big difference in the vehicle. In this case, it is a significant difference enough to add an extra seat in the back of the vehicle.
The estimate is that the new version will feature a dual motor with more power for North America, which may have a larger battery than 111 kWh, capable of generating 300 horsepower. These questions should be answered in a few weeks. However, North American buyers will still have to wait until 2024 to drive the new Volkswagen Electric Kombi.
Volkswagen Brings Good News for the Brazilian Automotive Sector
Volkswagen will also sell cars conventionally, unlike before, when it offered vehicles by subscription. Ciro Possobom, CEO of Volkswagen in Brazil, confirmed in an interview with Rádio CBN that the next units of cars will be sold outside the subscription model.
For now, there is still no expectation of when sales will begin or what the prices will be. Since the arrival of the new Kombi is recent, the subscription price for the model has not been disclosed by the automaker.
The price will be essential to know the future of VW electric vehicles in the country. The Brazilian market is filled with attractive offers from Chinese brands like BYD, which has already lowered the listed price of other electric cars in the country.
