Those who had their cell phone stolen took up to three business days to resume using the gov.br account. Now, the government has created a system that recovers access via email almost immediately. See how it works and the step-by-step to register the protection before you need it.

Having your cell phone stolen is already a hassle, and being without access to digital public services only worsens the situation. According to G1, on Jornal Nacional, the Federal Government has created a new system to recover the gov.br account much faster, reducing bureaucracy for those who lose access after a theft or robbery of the device.

According to G1, the change solves a problem that affected millions of users: until then, recovering the gov.br account could take days. With the new system, the process is now done through a recovery email, allowing the person to access their services almost immediately, without depending on long deadlines.

The drama of being without access after the theft

The story of internationalist Rodrigo Menezes helps to understand the problem. He had his cell phone stolen during a trip to São Paulo and, although buying a new device was quick, recovering access to the gov.br portal was another matter. Without the old phone, he was unable to use the services concentrated on the government’s platform.

The old process was slow and full of steps. “As soon as I returned to Rio and was able to use another cell phone, I needed to use facial recognition, deactivate two-factor verification, and they even gave a long deadline, two days,” reported Rodrigo. At the time, those in this situation could wait up to three business days to regain access.

What changes: recovery by email almost immediately

The new system targets precisely this delay. Instead of opening a ticket and waiting for days, the user now has a recovery email that restores access to the gov.br account almost immediately. The idea is simple: turn a bureaucratic process into something the person can resolve in minutes.

The Minister of Management and Innovation in Public Services, Esther Dweck, summarized the benefit. “If she has any difficulty, changed her phone, reformatted the phone, needs to access again, she will only receive in this email a way to reset the account and regain access. There is no longer the difficulty that existed before, of having to open a ticket with us,” she explained.

In practice, recovery requires accessing the app, entering the data, and doing facial recognition with another phone to prove identity; then, the system sends to the registered email the path to regain the account.

Step-by-step to register the protection email before the scam

The best way to avoid a headache is to set up protection in advance, and the process is quick. Just open the gov.br app, enter the access information, scroll to the end of the screen and tap on “Account Security” and then on “Two-step Verification”. There, the user selects the option to register a recovery email.

At this point, it is possible to use the email already linked to the gov.br account or provide another address of your choice. Then, just open the chosen email, copy the six-digit verification code, enter it in the app, and the protection will be completed. Once this is done, if the device is ever stolen, recovery will be much simpler.

Why two-step verification is essential

All this protection revolves around one feature: two-step verification, a kind of shield against scammers. With it activated, in addition to entering the password, the user needs to provide a six-digit code that changes every two minutes, which greatly complicates the life of anyone trying to hack the account.

Experts emphasize that it is worth it. For Victor Santos, general director of the security company Clavis, “having two-factor authentication makes the maximum possible security for gov.br” and is essential not only on the government platform but in any online account. The numbers show there is room for improvement: of the 177 million registrations on gov.br, only 60 million have two-step verification activated, according to the Ministry of Management and Innovation.

A relief for those who depend on digital services

The change is significant because the gov.br account has become the gateway to a vast number of public services, from daily tasks to financial and social security matters. Being without this access, even for a few days, can mean missing deadlines and stalling important tasks hence the importance of making recovery faster and keeping protection configured.

In the end, Rodrigo’s story had a happy ending: he strengthened the security of the account and even received the news that the São Paulo Civil Police had recovered the stolen phone. “Having this advantage, this upgrade, I think it will be good to go back to two-factor verification,” he concluded summarizing the message for all users.

And you, have you protected your gov.br account?

Phone theft is quick; recovering digital life, not always. With the new system, the government promises to restore access to the gov.br account almost immediately, but the ideal is to be proactive and register the recovery email today.

Have you already activated two-step verification on gov.br? Have you struggled to regain access after losing your phone? Tell us in the comments and take the opportunity to warn those who haven’t protected their account yet.
