Discover Which Dashboard Lights You Cannot Ignore And Understand How They Indicate Serious Failures In The Car. Learn To Identify An Alert On The Dashboard That Signals Problems In The Engine, Brakes, And Electrical System To Avoid Losses And Ensure Safety

Most drivers have come across a dashboard light illuminated in their car. Although it may seem simple or even “normal” to many, ignoring these signals can lead to serious failures in the car, putting both the owner’s safety and wallet at risk. According to studies, mechanical failures are among the main causes of accidents in Brazil, reinforcing the importance of immediate attention to dashboard alerts to avoid safety risks and damage to the vehicle.

Today, we show the five most neglected dashboard lights—and why each of them may indicate serious problems, whether in the engine, brakes, or electrical system of the vehicle.

Why Never Ignore A Dashboard Alert

Modern cars are equipped with electronic systems that monitor the functioning of all essential components.

The alert on the dashboard is the fastest and most direct way to notify the driver about malfunctioning issues. Even so, many people underestimate these signals, contributing to small defects turning into more expensive and even dangerous problems.

According to a survey by Allianz Partners, 51% of the services provided by 24-hour assistance in Brazil are caused by mechanical or electrical failures, many of which are associated with issues that could be avoided with attention to the dashboard alerts of the car.

Additionally, the Brazilian Traffic Code provides for fines and points on the driver’s license for anyone driving with evident safety failures, such as compromised braking systems.

Battery Light And Serious Failures In The Car

Among the most ignored dashboard lights is the battery light, usually represented by a red battery icon. It indicates a failure in the car’s charging system, which may include defects in the alternator, belt, or battery terminals themselves.

According to a study by the German Automobile Association (ADAC), problems in the electrical system, including failures in the alternator, starter motor, and lighting components, are responsible for about 23% of breakdown cases in combustion vehicles.

When this light turns on, the vehicle can lose electric charge quickly, turning off headlights, affecting the operation of the air conditioning, and even preventing the engine from functioning properly.

Recommendation: upon identifying the alert, turn off non-essential electrical equipment and seek a workshop immediately to avoid complete discharge.

Oil Light And Engine Problems

The oil light is one of the most critical and frequently neglected. It is represented by an icon in the shape of an oil lamp and indicates low pressure or lack of lubrication in the engine.

Ignoring this light can lead to overheating and irreversible damage to the engine in a matter of minutes.

The guidance is clear: if the oil light turns on while driving, stop the car immediately in a safe location, turn off the engine, and call for mechanical assistance.

Dashboard Alert: Brake System Light

The brake system light, normally a circle with an exclamation point or the word “BRAKE,” is a dashboard alert that should never be ignored. It can signal anything from low brake fluid level to severe failures in the hydraulic system.

According to data from the Federal Highway Police (PRF), failures in the braking system are among the main maintenance issues contributing to accidents on Brazilian highways. Many of these occurrences could be avoided with simple attention to the dashboard lights.

Experts recommend checking the fluid level and ensuring that the parking brake is properly released. If the light remains on, the recommendation is not to continue the trip without a technical diagnosis.

Injection System Light And Serious Failures In The Car

The famous “injection light,” illustrated by a yellow engine icon, is another that raises doubts among drivers. This light indicates failures in the fuel supply system, electronic injection, or engine sensors.

Automotive maintenance specialists warn that the electronic injection light on the dashboard indicates possible failures in the fuel supply system, which can cause loss of performance, increased consumption, and, in more severe cases, damage to the catalyst—a costly and essential component for emissions control.

Although the car may continue to run with the light on, the risks include sudden loss of power, serious engine failures, and fines for irregular pollutant emissions.

Dashboard Lights: ABS System And Hidden Risks

The ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) light, indicated by the acronym “ABS” lit on the dashboard, indicates problems in the system that prevents the wheels from locking during sudden braking.

The operation of the conventional brake is not interrupted, but the loss of ABS assistance significantly increases the risk of accidents on wet roads or during emergency braking.

Studies indicate that vehicles equipped with ABS have a significantly reduced risk of serious accidents, especially in emergency braking conditions and on slippery roads.

Therefore, upon noticing the ABS light on, it is essential to seek a specialized diagnosis as soon as possible.

Other Signs That Indicate Engine Or Electrical System Problems

In addition to the five highlighted dashboard lights, there are other warning signs on the dashboard that, although less common, also indicate serious failures in the car. Among them are the electric steering light, engine temperature light, and airbag light. All indicate systems fundamental to the safety and performance of the vehicle.

Manufacturers recommend always consulting the owner’s manual to understand the meaning of each light and never ignoring a persistent alert.

The Importance Of Attention To Dashboard Lights

The dashboard lights are far from being mere “aesthetic details” in your car. They are essential tools for maintaining the health of the vehicle and ensuring the safety of the driver and passengers. Ignoring any alert on the dashboard can result in engine problems, serious failures in the car, accidents, or high repair costs.

By understanding the meanings of the main lights and acting quickly upon identifying them, you avoid losses, maintain the proper functioning of your vehicle, and also contribute to safer traffic.

Don’t wait for failure to happen. Keep up with regular maintenance, pay attention to the signals, and seek technical assistance whenever any light comes on. This way, you prolong the life of your car and drive with much more peace of mind.
