Billund Airport in Denmark Was the Chosen Location for the Maersk Air Cargo Freight Hub.
The Maersk, a global giant in logistics, announced that it will have its own air transport network with owned and leased aircraft, just like the structure that the company has in its ocean fleet. The air logistics solutions service is called Maersk Air Cargo and aims to further increase the company’s presence in the global cargo sector. The hub will be at Billund Airport in Denmark.
According to the company, the capacity to be fed by Maersk Air Cargo has been designed to make supply chain journeys more “resilient and intuitive.” By combining maritime, land, and storage and customs services, the trend is to drive the supply chain in various ways.
Maersk’s ambition is for one-third of its annual air tonnage to be transported within this own controlled freight network. The remaining capacity will be supplied by strategic commercial carriers and charter flight operators, which are those that do not follow the regular airline schedules. The expectation is that Maersk Air Cargo will be fully operational by the second half of 2022.

“We see a growing and continuous demand for air cargo, both today and in the future, as well as a growing demand for end-to-end logistics, so it is important to strengthen our self-control capacity and advance even further in our air freight strategy.”

Maersk Air Cargo Aircraft Result from Partnership with Star Air
The air freight company Star Air has transferred its operations to Maersk Air Cargo. Thus, five aircraft were transferred, including two B777F models and three B767-300 freighters. Three new B767-300 freighters are also expected to be added. Maersk expects that by 2024 all these aircraft will be operational.
The presence of Maersk Air Cargo at Billund Airport is expected to favor the growth of the business community in Western Denmark. The airport’s CEO, Jan Hessellund, expresses pride in the project’s presence.
“We have seen growth, we challenged the pandemic, and we established a new record year in cargo in 2021. This does not happen without good partners, and we do what we can to make our partners good. Now, Maersk Air Cargo steps onto the stage at Billund Airport and elevates it a bit. We are incredibly proud to be chosen as Maersk’s European hub for air freight and look forward to developing the collaboration to new heights.”
