The Oil Spill Caused by a Leak in the BR Distribuidora Pump Caused a Moment of Panic in the Region.
Last Saturday (19), an oil leak in one of the BR Distribuidora pumps, which was privatized by the federal government in 2019, caused a disruption near REGAP – Ministro Gabriel Passos Refinery, in Betim. According to a report from Sindipetro/MG on Sunday (20), at least 100,000 liters of spilled oil reached the Pintados creek and moved toward the Ibirité lagoon.

BR Distribuidora Claims That at Least 300 Liters of Oil Were Spilled
BR Distribuidora argues that only 300 liters of oil were spilled. The incident occurred during the operation of diesel oil pumping at the Betim terminal (TEBET).
According to the union, the oil spill that reached the Pintados creek contaminated the watercourse flowing through the REGAP area. The union also claims that the volume of the oil spill from BR Distribuidora corresponds to more than three times the fuel carried by a tanker truck.

Petrobras approved the final investment decision for SEAP I (Sergipe Deep Waters), opening a new production frontier in the Northeast: Total investment for the two modules (SEAP I + SEAP II) exceeds R$ 60 billion, with an estimated production of more than 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
Since the oil spill, a team from Petrobras, which is active in the safety, environment, and health sector at Regap, has been active in the area to contain the oil spill.
“Around 6 AM, there was a leak from a pump seal. BR Distribuidora is not along with the Ministro Gabriel Passos Refinery; it is nearby. The oil crossed over, fell into the Pintados creek, which runs through Regap, and was headed toward the Ibirité lagoon. Petrobras is implementing contingency measures to ensure that the oil does not reach the lagoon. There has not yet been a measurement to know if it reached the lagoon, and the situation is not fully under control. If it reaches the lagoon, the oil will hit the Paraopeba River, which would be the biggest problem,” said the general coordinator of Sindipetro, Alexandre Finamori.
