In 2008, Earth Sent a Message to an Alien Planet with Photos of Celebrities and Politicians. The Signal Will Only Arrive at Its Destination in 2029 — and the Response, If It Comes, Will Not Be Before 2050.
In 2008, Earth sent a message to an alien planet called Gliese 581c. The destination is 21 light-years away, which means the message will only reach the planet in 2029. Even so, any response can only be received, at the earliest, in 2050.
The exoplanet Gliese 581c was discovered in 2007. It is the third planet in the Gliese 581 solar system, which orbits a red dwarf.
It has a mass equivalent to 5.5 times that of Earth. Together with the neighboring planet Gliese 581d, it is outside the so-called habitable zone, but features like cloud cover may open possibilities for the existence of life.

A Project to Search for Alien Life
Based on this slim chance, the “Message from Earth” project was created. The goal was to send a communication signal to verify if there is intelligent life on Gliese 581c.
The message included 501 photos and texts. The images were chosen by the public through the old social networking site Bebo. The initiative was organized by the Ukrainian Space Agency.
Among the faces sent to the aliens were former president Barack Obama, actress Gillian Anderson, singer Cheryl Cole, and politician Hillary Clinton.
The Long Wait for a Response
Even if the aliens are at home and able to understand what we sent, we should not expect a response before 2050. It will take 21 light-years to go and another 21 light-years to come back.
Now, we can only hope that the inhabitants of Gliese 581c are not offended by the photos and
