A Scary Wooden Face Carved Over A Thousand Years Ago Was Found At The Bottom Of A Lake In Poland. The Discovery Impresses By The Preservation And The Details That Reveal Spiritual Practices Of Ancient Slavs.
A surprising discovery has intrigued archaeologists in Poland. A face carved in wood, about 1,000 years old, was found by divers at the bottom of Lake Lednica. The piece, considered scary due to its realism, may reveal much about the spiritual beliefs of ancient Slavs.
Mysterious Expression Of A Distant Past
The face is 12 centimeters tall and 9 centimeters wide. It was carved from a structural beam, known as a “hook”, that was part of an ancient defensive wall.
The piece was located in 2024 by researchers from Nicolaus Copernicus University (NCU).

A farmer abandoned 5 cows on an island in the Indian Ocean, and they turned into a wild herd studied by scientists more than a century later through DNA preserved in a laboratory.
The carved features—well-defined eyes, nose, and mouth—show the skill of the woodworkers of the time. Researchers estimate that the piece was created around the year 967, during the Christianization of Poland under Mieszko I.
Surprising Preservation At The Bottom Of The Lake
Wooden objects rarely survive for so many centuries, as the material decomposes easily. However, the still, oxygen-free waters of Lake Lednica acted like a time capsule. Thanks to these conditions, the artifact has been preserved for a thousand years.
The NCU’s Center for Underwater Archaeology highlighted the importance of the discovery. For scientists, it shows how submerged archaeology can reveal rare details about the past.
Connection With Ancient Rituals And Beliefs
Other similar faces have been found in Slavic towns such as Wolin, Novgorod, and Staraya Ladoga. This indicates a common tradition among the Slavic peoples of the Middle Ages. The face could represent a deity, a hero, or a protective spirit.
The idea that the object had a spiritual function is reinforced by other findings at the site. Horse bones and jaws were found near the wall, suggesting sacrificial rituals.
Archaeologists believe that the carved face may have been part of a ritual to protect the settlement from external threats or evil forces.
The nearby offerings support this theory and show how spiritual symbols were part of the daily life of medieval Slavs.
