Microsoft Confirms End Of Functional Updates On Windows 10 And Advises Users To Migrate To Windows 11

Microsoft has set a deadline for new features of Microsoft 365 to reach users of Windows 10.
Starting from August 2026, tools like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint will no longer receive new features on this operating system.
Although security support will extend until 2028, the tech giant has made it clear that those who want to take advantage of the latest features of the Microsoft 365 suite will need to migrate to Windows 11.

Word, Excel, And PowerPoint Freeze On Version 2608

All future functionalities of Microsoft 365 tools, such as Word and Excel, will be limited to version 2608 on systems with Windows 10.
This version will be released by August 2026 for users of Microsoft 365 Family and Personal.

In the case of organizations, the last updates with new features will arrive by October 13, 2026 on the Monthly Enterprise Channel.
Or until January 12, 2027 on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel.

From these dates, the functional evolution of Microsoft 365 will end on Windows 10, regardless of the type of plan contracted.

However, even after these dates, the tools will continue to function normally, with guaranteed stability.
The only changes involve the cessation of new features, not blocking basic functionality.

Moreover, security updates will continue to be delivered until October 10, 2028, as confirmed by Microsoft itself.

Windows 10 Moves Toward End Of Support

This decision aligns with the schedule for the end of life cycle for Windows 10.
According to Microsoft, on October 14, 2025, the system will stop receiving any security or functionality updates.

Home users wishing to extend security for a longer time can pay around US$ 30 for an additional year of protection.
This amount may vary depending on the location.

For companies, there is the option of contracting extended support for up to three years.
However, it is important to note that this extension does not include functional enhancements, only security fixes.

Therefore, Microsoft’s official recommendation is clear: migrate to Windows 11.
However, this transition will not be easy for everyone, as the new system has hardware requirements that exclude machines manufactured before 2017.

This factor has driven increased interest in Linux distributions, seen as viable alternatives by users who do not wish to replace their computers.

Microsoft Adopts New Staggered Update Policy

From now on, all feature updates for Microsoft 365 will be developed exclusively for environments with Windows 11.
Even though the programs continue to operate on Windows 10, subscribers who keep this system will remain stuck on version 2608.

This means they will not have access to any future innovations and integrations planned.

This policy, although predictable, marks a transition point towards the definitive end of Windows 10.
This system has led the installed base of operating systems worldwide for years.

With over one billion active installations in 2023, according to StatCounter, Windows 10 began to lose ground after the launch of Windows 11.
This new system was released in October 2021.

Thus, Microsoft reinforces the traditional cycle of ending and renewing platforms.
However, the impact on users with older equipment raises criticisms and doubts.

The company, for its part, has directed its efforts to Windows 11, prioritizing the evolution of this system.
It has been promoting more robust integrations with artificial intelligence, cloud security, and advanced graphics performance.

System Change Is Inevitable For Those Who Want Modern Features

Therefore, even though Microsoft 365 will continue to function on Windows 10 until at least 2028, users who rely on new features and ongoing support will need to migrate.
It will be inevitable to migrate to Windows 11.

Although essential tools will remain operational, the blockage of new features will make the experience more limited over the years.

Thus, both home users and businesses should plan their technological transition before the deadlines expire.

Given the deadlines already established, August 2026 for new features and October 2028 for security updates, the decision to stay or migrate will cease to be a technical question.
It will become a practical necessity.
