US Military Visits Belarus to Monitor Russian Missile Tests Amid Zapad-2025 Exercises.
Two American officials landed in Belarus this Monday (09/15/25) to closely monitor military exercises conducted in partnership with Russia, in an unexpected move that reinforces Minsk’s approach to the West.
The visit, organized by the Belarusian Ministry of Defense, took place amid growing tensions between Moscow and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
During the tests, Russia launched a Kalibr missile from a nuclear submarine in the Barents Sea, raising international alarm about military escalation in the region.

Six times, a luminous crescent the size of the Moon startled the Soviet sky at dusk: it seemed like a wave of UFOs, but it was a secret orbital weapon created to attack the United States via the South Pole and evade Cold War radars.

Belarus Invites US Military for Unprecedented Inspection
The US military arrived in Minsk at the direct invitation of Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin. Although the country is one of Moscow’s closest allies, the gesture surprised due to the announced transparency.
“We will show you what is of your interest. Whatever you want. You can go there and see, talk to people,” said Khrenin, highlighting the unprecedented openness to dialogue.
According to the Ministry of Defense, in addition to the Americans, representatives from 23 other countries — including NATO members — were invited to observe the joint exercises, dubbed Zapad-2025.
Russia’s Missile Tests Heighten Tension
While the American officials were in Belarus, Russia conducted strategic missile tests. The launch occurred from the nuclear submarine Arkhangelsk, using the Kalibr missile against a target in the Barents Sea.
The announcement was made by the Interfax agency, which highlighted the success of the submerged launch.
These tests by Russia reinforce Moscow’s military power at a delicate moment for European security, especially after incidents involving Russian drones in Poland’s airspace, a NATO member.
Belarus Between Moscow and Washington
The presence of American military personnel in Belarus symbolizes a strategic shift. The country, which allowed Russia to use its territory for the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has been seeking to alleviate its international isolation.
The harsh sanctions imposed by the US and the European Union have made Minsk even more dependent on Moscow.
However, President Alexandr Lukashenko is trying to reduce this pressure through diplomatic gestures.
Last week, American envoy John Coale, linked to the Trump administration, was in Minsk for negotiations.
Lukashenko agreed to free 52 prisoners, including journalists and opponents, in exchange for the easing of sanctions on the state airline Belavia.
Signs of Closer Ties with the US
The Trump administration has already signaled its desire to reopen the US embassy in Minsk and resume trade relations.
In a letter recently sent to Lukashenko, Trump expressed his intention to strengthen ties and even involve Belarus in discussions about ending the war in Ukraine.
This move places the country in a delicate position: while it remains a historic ally of Russia, Belarus is moving closer to the United States in search of political and economic balance.
The Geopolitical Impact of the Zapad-2025 Exercises
The Zapad-2025 exercises, which include Russia’s missile tests and joint maneuvers with Belarus, are taking place in a scenario of increasing rivalry between Moscow and NATO.
After the violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones, the Western alliance has reinforced its borders in Eastern Europe.
The visit of American military personnel to Belarus, during the execution of the maneuvers, represents more than a diplomatic gesture: it is an attempt to closely monitor Russian strategic advances.
