Minister Alexandre Silveira Highlighted That Oil Is Still Essential for the Brazilian Economy and Advocated Sustainable Exploration of the Equatorial Margin as a Way to Ensure Sovereignty and Development.
The minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, reiterated his defense for the exploration of oil in the equatorial margin, emphasizing the need for Brazil to maintain a leading role in the energy sector. In an interview with radio station 98 News, made available this Monday, 15/09, the minister was emphatic: “Oil is a matter of demand, not supply. If we don’t supply, Saudi Arabia will.”
According to him, dependence on external sources can compromise national sovereignty and have direct impacts on the Brazilian economy.
Comparison Between Petrobras and Saudi Aramco
Silveira recalled his visit to Saudi Aramco, the largest oil company in the world, valued at around US$ 1.8 trillion. In contrast, Petrobras is valued at approximately US$ 100 billion, nearly 18 times less. For the minister, this scenario highlights the challenge Brazil faces in positioning itself in the international energy market.

During the interview, Alexandre Silveira reinforced that Brazil needs to ensure self-sufficiency in refining and oil production until clean and renewable sources can fully meet demand. “If we are not strategically self-sufficient, we will lose economically and subject our people to misery and hunger,” he stated.
For him, national development depends on dialogue and consensus among government, companies, and society.
Potential of the Equatorial Margin for Brazil
The minister also highlighted that the equatorial margin is a treasure of the Brazilian people and can generate benefits in different areas. Silveira emphasized that Petrobras is internationally recognized for the safety of its operations, especially in deep waters.
According to him, exploration will only occur after technical and strategic studies. If approved, it could boost the industrialization of the Northeast, increase national revenue, and strengthen Brazil’s geopolitical position.
“This will generate wealth, industrialization for the Northeast states, foreign exchange, and revenue for all of Brazil, strengthening our sovereignty and geopolitical position,” he concluded.
