In An Unprecedented Measure, Uber Allows Drivers to Block Passengers with Inadequate Behavior. The New Feature, Launched on the Eve of Carnival, Aims to Increase Safety and Respect in Rides.
Uber announced a new feature that promises to increase driver safety during their trips, especially during busy times like Carnival.
Now, drivers can block unwanted passengers directly in the app, a measure aimed at preventing issues and ensuring a better experience on the platform.
Carnival is one of the busiest periods for ride-hailing services.

With the high demand, complaints about inadequate behavior from some users also increase.
This scenario has made it essential to implement tools that ensure greater safety for partner drivers.
How Passenger Blocking Works
The blocking tool can be activated at the end of each ride, at the moment of user evaluation. If the driver assigns two or three stars, an extra button will be displayed, allowing the passenger to be blocked.
To effect the block, just select the option and click on “Rate User”. If the rating given to the passenger is only one star, the block will occur automatically.
On the other hand, positive ratings, with four or five stars, do not offer the blocking option, reinforcing that the feature is intended for situations where problems occurred during the ride.
This new feature joins other tools that Uber already offers to increase safety, such as verification via U-Code, where the passenger must provide a four-digit code to the driver before the trip begins, ensuring they boarded the correct vehicle.
Protection for Partner Drivers
The measure comes in response to the demands of drivers facing uncomfortable or even dangerous situations with some passengers.
According to the company, mutual respect should be a priority on the platform, and this new resource expands partner drivers’ autonomy to maintain a safer work environment.
Marcelo Brasileiro, Uber’s security operations manager, highlighted the importance of this initiative:
“The rating system works for both sides. We are always sending communications about how users can improve their ratings, and this becomes even more critical during Carnival. We want to promote a respectful and safe environment for everyone, and this new resource brings even more control and transparency to partner drivers.”
Other Security Measures from Uber
In addition to blocking passengers, Uber continuously invests in new technologies to enhance safety. Among the initiatives already implemented are:
- Audio Recording: available in some cities, allows drivers and passengers to record the audio of the ride in real time, which can be sent to Uber in case of incidents;
- Real-Time Route Sharing: allows the driver to send their location to trusted contacts during the ride;
- Identity Verification: Uber may request selfies or other documents to verify the identity of suspicious users.
These measures are part of the company’s commitment to ensuring a safer environment for everyone using the app.
Access to Received Ratings
Passengers can also track their own ratings within the app. To check the history of received ratings, simply access the Uber Privacy Center in the app menu, following these steps:
Account > Settings > Privacy > View Summary > Ratings.
This feature allows users to be aware of their behavior on the platform and improve their interactions with drivers, avoiding future blocks.
Impact of the New Feature for Drivers and Passengers
The ability to block unwanted users has the potential to significantly improve the experience for drivers.
Many report difficulties dealing with aggressive passengers who do not respect the rules or who simply cause discomfort during the ride.
For passengers, the new functionality also serves as an incentive to maintain appropriate behavior, as a poor rating may result in the inability to request rides with certain drivers in the future.
This new feature is part of a set of actions by Uber to ensure greater safety for drivers and passengers, especially during peak times in cities.
The company continues to reinforce guidelines of respect and good practices to make the use of the platform safer and more reliable for everyone.
