2024 Elections: What Happens If You Don’t Vote?
With the 2024 elections approaching, it’s important to keep in mind: voting is mandatory in Brazil for all literate citizens aged 18 to 70. Those who do not attend the polls, without justification, will have to pay a fine for each round missed. This could catch many people off guard!
The 2024 elections are scheduled for October 6, with the second round expected on the 27th of the same month, if necessary. For those thinking about skipping, it’s good to know that the fine amount has already been defined: R$ 3.51 per round. Resolution No. 23.659/2021 from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) makes it clear that this fee will be applied to those who do not justify their absence.
The justification can be made up to 60 days after the election date. But be careful: if this deadline is missed, you will need to go to an Electoral Registry Office to regularize your situation. And if the justification is rejected, a new fine may be applied, depending on the decision of the electoral judge.

How to Pay the Fine for Not Voting?
If you end up not voting and have to pay the fine, the process is quite simple. You can resolve this through the TSE website, the e-Título app, or directly at an electoral registry office. Payment options include PIX, credit card (via Mercado Pago or PicPay), and bank slip (Union Collection Guide – GRU). But be careful: slips with an amount less than R$ 50.00 can only be paid at Banco do Brasil.
If you have trouble confirming the information when paying the fine, the best course of action will be to go to your electoral zone to resolve the issue.
Consequences of Not Paying the Fine in the 2024 Elections
If you fail to vote in three consecutive elections, without justification or without paying the fine, your voter registration may be canceled. This brings a series of headaches! Some of the main consequences include:
Difficulties in obtaining or renewing a passport and identity card, especially for those living abroad. Inability to hold public office, receive salaries in government agencies, or participate in contests. Problems enrolling in or continuing studies in schools and universities. Limitations in selection processes and contests, as well as complications in carrying out acts that require proof of regularity with military service or income tax.
The 2024 elections are not only a moment to exercise citizenship but also a legal obligation. So, if you cannot vote, it’s better to justify or resolve the fine quickly to avoid bigger problems in the future.
First Election in Brazil
The first election in Brazil took place in 1532, in the village of São Vicente, located on the São Paulo coast. At that time, members of the Municipal Chamber were elected, one of the first public administration bodies in the country. This electoral process was quite restricted, with participation limited to white men, Catholics, and landowners, reflecting the colonial society of the time.
Over time, the Brazilian electoral system has undergone several changes, including the expansion of the right to vote and the creation of new democratic institutions. Only in 1932, with the creation of the Electoral Code, did voting become secret and extended to women, marking a significant advance in the country’s democratization process.
