The Japanese multinational Toyota and the Municipality of Sorocaba, in the state of São Paulo, signed a protocol of intentions on the 14th (Friday), referring to the investment of R$ 1 billion in the company's factory in the municipality, located in the interior of the state . The car manufacturer's investment will be aimed at modernizing the production line for the Corolla Cross, the automaker's new bet. Signing of the contract between Toyota and representatives of the municipality

The signing of the protocol of intentions took place at a ceremony at the City Hall on Friday morning. The ceremony was held after a meeting of Toyota representatives, among them the president of the company in Brazil, Rafael Chang, mayor Rodrigo Manga and municipal secretaries of Sorocaba, in São Paulo.

Rafael Chang, president of Toyota in Brazil, says that the company is studying the investment plan in Brazil, but he avoided giving details about the next steps of the Japanese multinational in the city. According to Rafael, it is a difficult moment due to the pandemic, but it is aimed at the medium and long term. The president of Toyota in Brazil also points out that he believes in the potential of the Brazilian market, in the possibility of exports, and also mentions that the conversation with the mayor was about the predictability they hope to have for the future, as investments are made for four to five years.

The CEO of Toyota Brasil also commented, during the meeting, with the mayor of Sorocaba, on issues of tax equality in São Paulo and accumulation of the Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS). Rafael says that the state of São Paulo should have the same level of taxes as other states, which sometimes have incentives for other brands, and they, as an automaker, do their homework by reducing costs, exporting more and locating more parts they use in production.

Job creation in the interior city of São Paulo

The expectation is that 800 jobs will be generated in the interior of São Paulo, 200 of which will be directly hired by Toyota, and another 600 indirectly, from companies that supply equipment for the production of the new model, the Corolla Cross. . The mayor of the municipality of Sorocaba also says that, at the meeting, Toyota informed that it should invest in the production of new models in two years from now in Sorocaba, generating even more jobs and prosperity for the region.

Rodrigo Manga also says that, in addition to direct jobs, people will consume in the city, which turns the chain and brings prosperity. With the advancement of vaccination, the municipality's priority is economic development and such confidence of the industry in the city has motivated a greater collection for the municipality.

Toyota's new production line in Sorocaba, in the state of São Paulo

The Corolla Cross is the world's first flex-fuel hybrid car with technology developed in Brazil, where it is possible to fill up with fuel and use electricity. Rafael Chang says that there is the advantage of not needing a plug, as it is a self-charging vehicle, in addition to using ethanol, a clean fuel produced in Brazil.

The sport utility vehicle (SUV) will be exported to 22 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. With an estimated 30% growth in production in 2021, compared to last year, the Toyota group estimates to end 2021 with 170 units produced. Of these, nearly 30% should reach other markets in the Latin American region.
