Potiguar Basin Has Deal Involving Wintershall Dea and Murphy Oil, and Both Companies Have Already Confirmed Participation in ANP’s 16th Bidding Round
Last week, Click Petroleum and Gas reported that the Basin of Ceará and Potiguar Could Have New Oil Companies Operations. Well, Wintershall confirmed today (10/09) the completion of an agreement for the sale of 30% of its stake in exploratory blocks POT-M-857, POT-M-863, and POT-M-865, all in the Potiguar Basin, to the American Murphy Oil.

The member of Wintershall Dea’s Board of Directors responsible for Brazil, Thilo Wieland, spoke about the country’s importance to the oil company, “The transfer of participation in these areas aligns with Wintershall Dea’s strategy to maintain a balanced exploration portfolio. Chosen as a growth region, Brazil plays an important role for the company,” he stated.
Wintershall is awaiting a license for an exploratory well in the POT-M-857 block area, in deep waters of the Potiguar Basin in Rio Grande do Norte. This asset was acquired after a dispute with a consortium formed by Petrobras, Shell, and Petrogal.
Regarding the competition for the other two blocks, POT-M-863 and POT-M-865, Wintershall’s victory was over a consortium formed by Petrobras and Shell.
Wintershall and Murphy Oil will participate in ANP’s 16th bidding round, which takes place tomorrow (10/10) in Rio de Janeiro, with 36 blocks being offered in the auction from seven sectors of five maritime sedimentary basins: Pernambuco-Paraíba, Jacuipe, Camamu-Almada, Campos, and Santos, totaling 29.3 thousand km² of area.
