Elon Musk’s Startup, Neuralink Opens New Spots for Volunteers with Paralysis to Test Brain Chip That Allows Control of Devices with Thought. Registration Open for the PRIME Study.
The Neuralink, neurotechnology company founded by Elon Musk, announced last Wednesday (2) the opening of new spots for volunteers willing to participate in clinical trials with brain implants.
The goal of the initiative is to expand experiments with its technology for brain-computer interface (BCI), which allows control of electronic devices using only thought.
The announcement was made through the company’s official profile on the platform X (formerly Twitter) and invites people from all over the world to sign up, as long as they meet the required medical criteria.

A shelf cloud advances over a beach on the north coast of São Paulo, impresses tourists in Bertioga, and indicates the sudden arrival of a cold front with strong winds, an abrupt change in weather, and greater risk for those at sea.

Up to 100 mm of rain will sweep across western Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul in less than 72 hours, with hail and gales of up to 100 km/h, while the same cold front that will drench the South pushes a polar air mass that drops temperatures to between 0°C and 4°C on Sunday, when frost covers the border with Uruguay and the most intense cold of the long weekend arrives after the rain departs.

A country surrounded by scarcity transforms treated sewage into an “agricultural weapon” while the river that supplied generations becomes a regional dispute: Israel recycles almost 90% of its wastewater for irrigation and exposes the water abyss of its neighbors who still depend on what’s left in the Jordan River.

Climate change and pollution elevate heart risks: analysis with over 8 million people links extreme heat to 7.5% more complications and 9.5% more deaths, while pollutants already appear in 13% of cardiovascular deaths.
Study Aims at Patients with Paralysis
The focus of the project is on people living with quadriplegia or other conditions that significantly impair the movement of arms and legs.
“If you have quadriplegia and are interested in exploring innovative ways to control a computer using your thoughts, you can now sign up from anywhere in the world,” states the post made by Neuralink.
The startup is looking for candidates to participate in the “PRIME Study”, the name given to the clinical research aimed at testing both the safety of the surgical procedure and the initial efficacy of the wireless brain chip.
The implant, described as “cosmetically invisible,” is placed in the region of the brain responsible for movement.
How Does the Neuralink Chip Work?
According to Neuralink, the device can interpret neural signals in real time, allowing the user to operate computers, mobile phones, and even video games solely with their mind. To participate, interested individuals must fill out a form available on the PRIME Study website.
The selection is aimed at individuals with cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), who have little or no control of their hands.

Advances and Future Plans
So far, three volunteers have already received the brain implant developed by the company. The first participant reported being able to play chess and video games with their mind, while the second uses the chip to draw in 3D programs and play. The third received the device in early 2025.
Neuralink received authorization from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), the regulatory body in the United States, in September 2023, to begin testing in humans. Elon Musk celebrated the initial advances and stated that he intends to expand the number of volunteers to up to 30 people later this year.
With this new phase, Neuralink expands its search for volunteers and strengthens its mission to transform the relationship between the human brain and machines. The promise is ambitious: a future where physical limits can be overcome by neural technology.
