New Transport Route Between China and Ceará Promises Significant Logistical Changes for Imports and Exports, Bringing Agility and Competitiveness to Foreign Trade.

The inauguration of a new maritime route, directly linking China to the Port of Pecém in Fortaleza (Ceará), promises to transform the northeastern state into an international logistics hub of relevance.

This direct connection will halve the transport time for goods, benefiting e-commerce platforms like Shein, Shopee, and AliExpress, which will be able to take advantage of a more agile and cost-effective logistics.

The announcement of the new route was made on Wednesday (8) and involves a strategic partnership between MSC and APM Terminals, operators responsible for the Santana Service, the new line that directly connects Ceará to the Asian continent.

The major advantage of this route is the time savings and reduction in logistical costs, which will make Ceará an attractive point for importers and international trade companies.

According to Max Quintino, president of the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (Cipp), the route will reduce the transport time, which is currently 60 days, to just 30 days, making the state even more competitive in the global scenario.

How the New Route Between China and Ceará Will Work

The route starting at the Port of Pecém in Ceará will be the first stop in Brazil for ships coming from Asia.

This change promises to significantly decrease import costs and expedite the flow of goods.

Before this new connection, goods arriving in Brazil passed through ports like Santos (SP) and then continued to Ceará.

Now, the logistics will be more direct, with products arriving faster and at a reduced cost.

The route of the Santana Service covers important Asian ports, starting from Mundra in India and passing through Singapore, before arriving in China, where it goes through ports like Yantian, Ningbo, Shanghai, Qingdao, and lastly, Busan in South Korea.

After this crossing, the ships proceed through the Pacific Ocean, passing through the Panama Canal, until they reach Pecém, with stops in Cristobal (Panama) and Caucedo (Dominican Republic).

This route will be essential to reduce the travel time of goods between China and Brazil, which currently averages 60 days, to about 30 days, representing a 50% decrease in transport time.

The Impact on E-Commerce Platforms

With the reduction in transport time, e-commerce platforms, such as Shein and Shopee, will be directly benefited.

These companies will be able to reduce consumers’ waiting time, improve their internal logistics, and, at the same time, lower operational costs.

The forecast is that the volume of cargo between Asia and Ceará will increase by up to 20%, which will bring direct benefits to the companies and indirectly to consumers, although the reduction in product prices may not be immediate.

For lawyer and logistics expert Larry Carvalho, the 50% reduction in transport time will generate a decrease of approximately 20% in port operational costs, which represents a significant gain for importers.

This impact will be even more relevant for cargo that requires agility, such as e-commerce products that demand fast and efficient deliveries to meet an increasingly demanding clientele.

Changes in Imports and Exports

The new route will not bring changes to exports, which will continue to follow the traditional route through the Port of Pecém, passing through Suape (PE), Salvador (BA), and Santos, before returning to Asia.

However, imports, especially goods coming from China, will be directly impacted by the new route.

High-demand products, such as electronics, textiles, and household appliances, will arrive more quickly and efficiently in Ceará.

According to Augusto Fernandes, foreign trade expert and CEO of JM Negócios Internacionais, the expectation is that the flow of imports will increase by up to 20% with the arrival of this new route.

He believes that this change will optimize the logistics of the state, allowing for greater efficiency in the transport of goods and improvement in the import process.

Additionally, the new route will open doors for northeastern products, such as cashew nuts, carnauba wax, and footwear, to reach the Asian market more quickly.

This may result in a greater connection between Ceará’s products and consumers in countries like China, Japan, and South Korea, as well as allowing for an increase in exports to this market of over 2 billion people.

The Increase in Cargo Movement

With a forecast of at least 1,200 containers arriving weekly, the Port of Pecém is expected to experience a significant increase in the volume of cargo handled.

The estimate is that cargo movement will grow by about 10% with the implementation of the new route, which represents a considerable leap for the Port of Pecém and, consequently, for the Ceará economy.

André Magalhães, commercial director of Cipp, highlights that this new route will contribute to the diversification of the state’s exports, allowing Ceará’s products to reach the Asian market more quickly.

Easy access to this market will be a strategic advantage for local industries, which will be able to import essential machinery and supplies for their production.

Benefits for the Local Economy and Job Generation

The positive impact of the new route extends to the local economy, with job creation in the port sector and related areas such as logistics and foreign trade.

The greater connectivity with Asian ports, along with the reduction in logistical costs, will help solidify Ceará as a port hub in Brazil, attracting investments and improving the competitiveness of Ceará’s exports.

Furthermore, the strengthening of the port sector and the increase in the flow of goods have the potential to generate more jobs and stimulate local economic growth, creating new opportunities for Ceará companies and workers.

Long-Term Impact for Ceará

With the proximity of the Panama Canal, the Port of Pecém consolidates itself as a strategic point for international trade, linking Brazil to Asia more efficiently.

This positions Ceará as one of the main logistical hubs in the country, with an infrastructure capable of meeting the growing demand for fast and efficient transportation, benefiting companies of all sizes and sectors.

The competitiveness of exports of fruits, footwear, and other typical products of the state will be a direct reflection of the greater connectivity with Asian markets.

The impact of this change goes beyond mere transport of goods; it will strengthen Ceará’s economy and enable the state to position itself as a reference in foreign trade, with a more efficient and faster flow of goods.
