The Luxury Off-Road SUV Yangwang U8 from BYD Is About to Get a Three-Row Version to Compete with the Giants of the SUV Segment
BYD, known for its innovation in the electric vehicle sector, is about to launch a new version of its luxury off-road SUV U8, expanding the current model to a three-row configuration. With the goal of challenging market giants like the Range Rover and the Defender, the new U8 model promises to be an impressive addition to the brand’s portfolio, according to Electrek.
U8 BYD Off-Road SUV
The U8 off-road SUV was introduced by BYD’s luxury brand Yangwang last November, standing out as a heavyweight rival to models like the Mercedes G-Class and the Range Rover. Initially, the U8 was offered with a two-row configuration and a range of innovative features, such as flotation mode and exceptional water crossing capabilities. The off-road model can face up to 1,400 mm of water with the Off-Road Master configuration, surpassing even the Defender in terms of crossing depth.
Recently, the U8 SUV was spotted in China in its new three-row configuration. The images show an increase in wheelbase and an extended rear overhang, maintaining its robust and imposing design identity with the famous front grille and distinctive headlights. Despite the changes, the model continues to feature the spare tire mounted at the rear, a characteristic that enhances its off-road appeal.

Details and Expectations for the New Model
The current U8 model has generous dimensions, measuring 5,319 mm in length, 2,050 mm in width, and 1,930 mm in height. The three-row version is expected to be even larger, providing additional space and a 2+2+2 seating layout with captain’s chairs in the second row, as speculated. The interior of the new U8 will be equipped with BYD’s latest technology, including a 12.8-inch infotainment system, an instrument panel, and a passenger screen, both 23.6 inches, along with dual 12.8-inch screens for rear passengers.
Competition and Official Launch of the BYD Vehicle
The new three-row U8 is being designed to compete with other three-row luxury SUVs, such as the Range Rover Executive and the Defender 130. The official unveiling of the model will take place at the Chengdu Auto Show, scheduled for August 30. This expansion of Yangwang’s portfolio underscores BYD’s ambition to establish itself in new market segments, diversifying its reach beyond low-cost electric vehicles.
