New regulation makes criteria for the commercialization of energy equipment more rigorous. According to UNICOBA's Commercial Manager, Inmetro's regulations will increase the level of product quality and benefit consumers

The new regulation for solar energy equipment sold in Brazil recently published by Inmetro (National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology), which establishes new mandatory requirements for generation, conditioning and energy storage in all products in the national market, changed significantly the way in which the body will carry out its supervisory activities. This initiative makes the solar energy market more rigorous and benefits consumers and companies that already meet the criteria established by ordinance 140/2022, published in the Official Gazette of the Union. The regulation comes into effect from May 2nd.

Main innovations of the new regulation of Inmetro

“The new ordinance is a great victory for the entire solar energy segment and, above all, for the final consumer, who will have products inspected through the rules of an agency as important as Inmetro. It was not clear which companies met the technical norms, the levels of safety, resistance and other requirements”, highlighted Caio Lentini, Commercial Manager of UNICOBA.

Among the main novelties of the update of the ordinance, there is the presentation of the seal IN THIS (National Energy Conservation Label) in a visible way to the consumer, the obligation of hybrid inverters connected to the grid and the inclusion of on-grid inverters for hybrid batteries and lithium batteries.

Even knowing that solar energy is an intermittent source when supplemented by other matrices that use batteries for connection to the electrical grid, before the publication of the ordinance, this system did not have any type of regulation.

“Now, with the new ordinance, users will be safe to buy equipment that allows more than one source of energy, including energy storage by hybrid or lithium batteries, for example. It is a great advance to bring us closer and closer to the increase in energy generation from renewable sources”, reinforced Caio.

Batteries with a useful life of up to 6.000 charge and discharge cycles

In addition to the measure representing a significant advance for the regulated sector and valuing quality, the national solar energy system also now has more security, since, in order to operate in the national solar energy, all companies will have to follow the rules imposed by Inmetro and energy distributors will have to approve installations with this equipment.

“Lithium iron phosphate batteries manufactured by UNICOBA have always been produced to have a useful life of up to 6.000 charge and discharge cycles and to work at temperatures of up to 60ºC. If the power grid has an oscillation, photovoltaic systems with batteries help stabilize the grid and maintain customer service. Now, all manufacturers operating in the country also have to follow the same requirement”, said Lentini.
