One of the most promising advances in the field of pulmonology is robot-assisted bronchoscopy, an innovative method that improves the accuracy in identifying pulmonary nodules and speeds up lung cancer diagnosis.

This approach allows the tumor to be detected in early stages, significantly increasing the chances of successful treatment.

How Does Robot-Assisted Bronchoscopy Work?

Unlike traditional bronchoscopy, which uses a flexible tube with a camera to visualize the interior of the lungs, the robot-assisted technique acts like a high-precision GPS, facilitating navigation through hard-to-reach areas.

This procedure stands out for being minimally invasive and for offering greater stability and control to the physician, reducing the risk of errors.

According to pulmonologist Abubakr Bajwa from the Mayo Clinic, who recently visited Brazil, robotic bronchoscopy surpasses traditional methods like needle biopsies and surgical exams, offering advantages such as:

Greater accuracy in detecting pulmonary nodules;

Reduction in the need for invasive procedures;

Faster and more efficient diagnosis;

Shorter wait time for results;

Greater safety and comfort for the patient.

The Stages of the Examination with Robotic Assistance

The process of robot-assisted bronchoscopy occurs in four main stages:

1-Preliminary Planning: The physician performs a CT scan to map the lungs and identify suspicious nodules;

2-Robotic Navigation: With the help of the robot, the bronchoscope is guided to hard-to-reach areas;

3-Sample Collection: A biopsy device extracts lung tissue for analysis;

4-Real-Time Imaging: Fluoroscopy and tomography ensure the accuracy of the procedure.

Quick Diagnosis and Impact on Lung Cancer Treatment

The early detection of lung cancer is a crucial factor in increasing the chances of a cure.

According to Bajwa, patients diagnosed in the early stages of the disease have significantly higher survival rates compared to those who discover the tumor in advanced stages.

With robotic bronchoscopy, the time for confirmation of the diagnosis is reduced, allowing treatment to start more quickly. This avoids the need for multiple procedures, speeds up sample collection, and decreases the wait time for laboratory results.

Bajwa explains that the accuracy of the exam reduces the need for repeated biopsies, which also contributes to a more efficient and less taxing treatment for the patient.

Research Explores New Uses of Robotic Technology in Cancer Treatment

In addition to diagnosis, scientists at the Mayo Clinic are investigating new ways to use robot-assisted bronchoscopy in lung cancer treatment.

Among the possibilities being studied is targeted administration of chemotherapy drugs directly to the pulmonary nodules.

Another promising approach is the use of technology to place markers that optimize radiotherapy, allowing for more precise and effective treatment.

Currently, lung cancer treatment still mainly relies on surgery, radiotherapy, and systemic therapies.

However, Bajwa believes that robot-assisted interventions could become a viable option in the future, reducing the negative impacts of conventional treatments and improving patients’ quality of life.
