The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture was a federal government agency in Brazil responsible for formulating and implementing public policies for the sustainable development of fishing and aquaculture in the country. It was created in 2003, during the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and its main objective was to promote the expansion and modernization of fishing and aquaculture activities, as well as the conservation of fishery resources and the generation of jobs and income for coastal and riverside communities.
Among the main duties of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture were the formulation of policies for the sector, the promotion of scientific and technological research, the oversight of fishing and aquaculture activities, the encouragement of sustainable production, the organization of productive chains, the promotion of foreign trade of fish and aquaculture products, and the development of training and technical assistance programs for fishermen and aquaculturists.
In 2015, during the administration of President Dilma Rousseff, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture was dissolved, and its duties were absorbed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply, as part of an administrative restructuring of the federal government. With this change, policies related to fishing and aquaculture became integrated with policies directed at the agribusiness sector in general.
