With Support from MP and AGE, Minas Governor Guarantees Continuity of Line 2 Subway Works in Greater BH.
The Government of Minas Gerais officially signed a historic agreement with 341 families living in areas that will be vacated to allow the continuation of the works for Line 2 of the Subway in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte (RMBH).
This measure ensures not only the compensation of the residents but also dignified transition conditions, while unlocking one of the most anticipated urban mobility projects in the last 20 years in the capital and surrounding areas.
As a result, the construction schedule remains on track, benefiting more than 50,000 people daily when completed.

Agreement Marks Decisive Advancement for Urban Mobility
After months of dialogue, the understanding was built in a mediation process led by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Minas Gerais (MPMG), with participation from the State Secretariat of Infrastructure, Mobility and Partnerships (Seinfra), the State Attorney General’s Office (AGE), the Public Defender’s Office, the Metrô BH concessionaire, and representatives of the affected families.
According to Governor Romeu Zema, the agreement represents a balance between the progress of the works and respect for the rights of the residents:
“It is with great satisfaction that we announce this agreement with the families, who will not be left unsupported, and we ensure the continuation of the project, which will transform the reality of the population of the capital and the metropolitan region”.
Compensation and Support in Family Transition
Each of the 341 families will receive financial compensation, as well as four months of social rent, which will be credited directly to the beneficiaries. They will be able to choose the properties where they wish to live temporarily.
The concessionaire will also be responsible for covering two moves: one to the temporary residence and another to the new permanent property acquired with the compensation funds.
The Vice Governor Mateus Simões celebrated the outcome of the negotiation, highlighting the speed and respect for citizens’ rights:
“This agreement, signed between Metrô BH and the families just over a month into the negotiations, is yet another important milestone for the consolidation of Line 2 of the subway. While the families were heard and we managed to ensure the rights of each one of them, we are also ensuring compliance with the timeline of this long-awaited project by the residents not only of Belo Horizonte but also of the metropolitan region”.
Planning of Vacating and Safety in the Works
Metrô BH will be responsible for the individual formalization of the agreements and the payments. The vacating of the properties will follow a schedule defined together with the residents and the concessionaire, aiming for safety and organization.
After the families’ departure, the existing structures will be demolished to make way for the construction work fronts.
Pedro Bruno, Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Mobility and Partnerships, emphasized that the process was built with dialogue and responsibility:
“Reaching this agreement is a great step for the continuation of Line 2, a project that represents the transformation of urban mobility in RMBH. We made it a point to build this process with dialogue, responsibility, and respect for the rights of the people involved”.
Historic Project: Line 2 of the Subway Begins to Take Shape
The works for Line 2 of the Subway in RMBH began in September 2024, with the construction of the Amazonas and Nova Suíça stations.
The line will have a length of 10.5 kilometers and seven new stations, promoting integration with Line 1, reducing travel time, and significantly improving the quality of life for thousands of workers and students.
Sérgio Pessoa de Paula Castro, Attorney General of the State, emphasized the importance of the consensual solution:
“This agreement reinforces once again the commitment of the Government of Minas and AGE-MG to fostering a culture of depoliticization through consensual, swift, and effective solutions. More than 50,000 residents in the region will benefit from Line 2. And as Governor Romeu Zema emphasized, the 341 families who will be compensated will not be left unsupported”.
Commitment to Modern Infrastructure and Social Justice
The signed agreement symbolizes not only a technical advancement for the subway project but also a social milestone.
The construction of Line 2 is a historic demand from the population of RMBH and represents the commitment of the Government of Minas to provide modern, efficient, and socially just infrastructure.
The initiative also reinforces the culture of conflict resolution through administrative means, avoiding legal disputes and promoting agility in processes, through initiatives such as the Administrative Conflict Prevention and Resolution Chamber (CPRAC) of AGE and the Conflict Resolution and Legal Security Center (Compor) of MPMG.
With this stage overcome, the Government of Minas reaffirms its commitment to integrated urban development, placing citizens at the center of decisions and promoting real improvements in mobility in the capital and the metropolitan region.
