With 800 Batteries, The Asian Energy Storage Occupies An Area of 2 Hectares, Almost 3 Football Fields
The Energy Market Authority of Singapore (EMA) and Sembcorp – an industrial conglomerate headquartered in Singapore – announced the activation of a 285 MWh energy storage system, with 800 lithium iron phosphate batteries, which will serve the city-state. According to a publication from insideevs.uol, the system features 800 high-energy density lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and occupies an area equivalent to 2 hectares.
Thus, the high-capacity energy storage will be sufficient to meet the electricity needs of about 24,000 four-bedroom homes for a day. According to Sembcorp, this is the largest energy storage system in Southeast Asia.
About The Energy System and Its Capacity to Mitigate Intermittencies
Sembcorp stated about the system: “Its rapid response time to store and provide energy in milliseconds is essential to mitigate solar intermittency caused by changing weather conditions in Singapore’s tropical climate.” In addition, the company mentioned that “it can also provide reserves for the power grid, which frees power generation plants to generate more electricity to meet demand when necessary.”

How Does The Powerful Storage System Work?
When it comes to the operation of the storage, its central control system regulates the charge and discharge cycles of the batteries, according to the needs of the grid. Furthermore, the integrated system includes liquid cooling structures or integrated air conditioning systems to maintain optimal operating temperatures.
To complement, the storage system utilizes Envision’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) platform for monitoring and control services, and also features Huawei’s Smart String ESS solution for temperature control.
