Paranaense tries to bring a 1956 GMC PD-4501 Scenicruiser to Brazil, unit 907 of 1,001 produced, but the bus remains stuck in Mexico due to a documentary discrepancy in the serial number
A rare bus manufactured in 1956 is held at the Port of Veracruz, Mexico, due to a documentary discrepancy in the serial number. The vehicle belongs to Walderley César Saldanha from Maringá, who is trying to bring a GMC PD-4501 Scenicruiser to Brazil, a model he has dreamed of owning since childhood.
Rare bus is unit 907 of 1,001 produced
The vehicle purchased by Walderley is a GMC PD-4501 Scenicruiser, manufactured in 1956. According to him, the bus corresponds to unit 907 out of a total of 1,001 units produced.
The connection with the model began in childhood. Walderley states that he has dreamed of owning a Scenicruiser since he was 12 years old, when he received a miniature of the bus.

The miniature, kept to this day, became part of the motivation to try to bring the real vehicle to Brazil.
The search began in 2009 when a friend found a specimen in Canada. After the purchase, Walderley only managed to see the bus for the first time in 2012.
The process, however, progressed slowly due to the condition of the vehicle and the difficulties in gathering parts, money, and documentation.
Vehicle was idle for over 40 years before returning to operation
The Scenicruiser had been unused for over 40 years. Therefore, the work involved internal disassembly, searching for components, and attempting to restore minimal operating conditions.
Walderley shared on social media that the interior was compromised and needed to be removed. The idea is to maintain the bus’s original aesthetics but adapt the internal space for personal use, with more suitable seats, a kitchen, living room, double bed, wardrobe, refrigerator, and bathroom.
He also highlighted that the fuselage is in good condition and is made of riveted aluminum. According to Walderley, the model had expensive technologies for the time, a factor that may have contributed to its relatively early discontinuation.

Saga passed through the United States before reaching Mexico
After much work, Walderley managed to start the bus and drive it to the California desert, in the United States, where the vehicle was stored at an acquaintance’s farm for almost a year and a half.
Upon returning, he found stolen parts and had to buy new components. The project was supported by friends, social media followers, and also by selling a Kombi he owned, an important resource to continue the recovery.
About seven months ago, the bus managed to drive to the Port of Veracruz, in Mexico. Since then, it has remained stationary there, without clearance to continue the journey.
Documentation stalls the arrival of the rare bus in Brazil
Despite the authorizations to cross three countries, Mexican port authorities pointed out a discrepancy in the serial number. Walderley claims that the problem is merely documentary and that the situation is regularized.
The release still depends on legal measures. A lawyer is already working on the documentation to try to unlock the vehicle’s departure from Mexico.
When able to leave Veracruz, Walderley’s plan is to send the bus to the Port of Zárate, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
From there, he intends to drive to Maringá, in Paraná, where the Scenicruiser should finally join the miniature that originated the dream.
