The Enel Green Power Wind Farm Has Started Commercial Operation. The 716 MW Unit Is Located in Three Cities in Piauí
Enel Green Power, the Brazilian renewable energy subsidiary of the Enel Group, recently started the commercial operation of the Lagoa dos Ventos wind farm, the largest of its kind in South America and the largest for the Italian company globally. The unit, with a capacity of 716 MW, is located in three cities in the state of Piauí: Lagoa do Barro do Piauí, Queimada Nova, and Dom Inocêncio. According to the company, the project had an investment of around R$ 3 billion. See also: Wind farm that received investments of over R$ 1.5 billion starts operating. The Enel Green Power Wind Farm in the State of Piauí
According to data released by Enel Green Power, the wind farm in Piauí comprises 230 wind turbines. The company also noted that in December 2020, Enel announced the start of construction of the new wind project Lagoa dos Ventos III, with 396 MW.
With the new wind farm, which will require an investment of around €360 million, the total capacity of Lagoa dos Ventos will reach about 1.1 GW. The entire wind complex will have 302 wind turbines and could generate around 5.0 TWh per year. Furthermore, when fully operational, the 716 MW facility could generate over 3.3 TWh per year, avoiding the emission of more than 1.6 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.
The Lagoa dos Ventos Park and Its Operations
The CEO of Enel Green Power and head of the Global Power Generation business line at Enel, Salvatore Bernabei, states that the Lagoa dos Ventos park is a record-breaking wind project and its start of commercial operations is an important milestone for Enel Green Power worldwide, especially in light of the challenges of the global health scenario.
Salvatore Bernabei further emphasized that, as the project is the largest wind farm in the world, Lagoa dos Ventos represents a significant step towards the sustainable growth of Enel Green Power, while also supporting green recovery in Brazil and further contributing to the diversification of the country’s energy matrix.

The new wind farm in Paraíba may start construction in July, generating various job openings for the project’s works. The state government signed, on April 27, a protocol of interactions with EDF Renewables – a company that operates in the renewable energy sector.
The project envisages the construction of the wind farm in the municipalities of Santa Luzia and Junco do Seridó, located in the Sertão of Paraíba. The expectation is that the project will generate over 600 direct and indirect jobs, with investments of around R$ 1 billion, says the government of Paraíba.
With the construction of the wind farm, the project will be the first of EDF Renewables in the state of Paraíba. The new wind farm may start commercial operation in early 2023 and have an installed capacity of 242 MW.
