Only In The First Quarter Of The Ocyan Project’s Work, Fishermen Found, Among Many Strange And Improper Objects For The Location, 14 Sofas And A Box Bed
Last week, when Ocyan’s Clean Bay project celebrated the removal of 25 tons of trash and waste from Guanabara Bay, project fishermen found a plastic milk bag that, based on the still legible seven-digit phone number, can be concluded to be from the last century, since only after 2000 did landline phones start to have eight digits. The packaging also shows the milk’s expiration date, at the time, of just one week. However, it does not inform the lifespan of the plastic bag that remained intact in the bay for at least 25 years. Also from the 20th century, a Coca-Cola bottle from 1998 was recently retrieved from Guanabara Bay.
“The Clean Bay project discovered a submerged itinerant museum of drifting waste in Guanabara Bay. It is difficult to date when they date from and when they were dumped in the waters, but some items like this milk packaging give us an idea. They are mostly plastic objects, but also backpacks, shoes, flip-flops, sofas, tube TVs, and even box beds, which reinforces the importance of this work with fishermen, but also of education and environmental awareness for all residents of Rio,” says André de Barros, Communication, Social Responsibility, and Diversity Manager.
Only in the first quarter of the Ocyan project’s work, fishermen found, among many strange and improper objects for the location, 14 sofas and a box bed. The Ocyan Clean Bay aims to collect 100 tons of waste from Guanabara Bay in 12 months.
