Petrobras Project Will Be Located Offshore in Rio Grande do Norte and Is Part of the Oil Company’s Business Plan Review for the Period 2020-2024
As reported by Click Petróleo e Gás on September 26, Petrobras has revised its strategic business plan for 2020-2024 and announced that it will invest in renewables.
Indeed, confirming the energy transition that not only Petrobras but all major oil companies globally are undergoing, the Diário Oficial da União published on October 4 a request (see at the end of the article) made by the state-owned company to IBAMA for prior and installation licenses for the implementation of an offshore wind generation pilot plant.
The environmental study involves an offshore wind farm to be installed about 20 km from the coast of Guamaré, in the Ubarana field, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.

According to a report produced by consulting firm KPMG in partnership with equipment manufacturer Siemens Gamesa, titled “The Socioeconomic Impacts of Wind Energy in the Context of the Energy Transition”, wind generation could supply about 34% of global electricity demand by 2040, up from the current 4%.
Wind energy will also play a significant role in reducing global CO² emissions by 5.6 billion tons by 2050, which means it will alone contribute to an equivalent reduction of 23% of the target expected for this period and the annual emissions of the 80 most polluting cities on the planet.
Benefits to Humanity
Energy produced from winds would represent a savings of US$ 386 billion in costs related to climate change disasters, health, and temperature increase by 2050, a figure equivalent to Norway’s GDP.
At the same time, an economy based on renewable energies, like wind power, would increase wealth for everyone. The report estimates that global GDP would increase by approximately US$ 20 trillion by 2050, equivalent to about US$ 2,500 per person.
Without polluting gases and their drastic consequences, the annual reduction in health-related costs would reach US$ 3.2 trillion, saving up to four million lives per year.
The implementation of this offshore plant by Petrobras is just the beginning of actions in an area where financial incentives and specific policies are still lacking for the long-desired energy efficiency to become a reality.
