Petrobras Signed a Contract Worth R$ 1.61 Billion with Mota-Engil for Offshore Platform Services. The Agreement Strengthens the Presence of the Portuguese Company in Brazil and Expands Its Operations in the Oil and Gas Sector, Focusing on Maintenance and Infrastructure.
Petrobras has just signed a high-value contract with the Portuguese construction company Mota-Engil, totaling R$ 1.61 billion, marking another important step in expanding the presence of the European company in the Brazilian market. The contract, signed through Mota-Engil’s Brazilian subsidiary, includes the execution of maintenance and assembly services on offshore oil platforms over the next 48 months.
This move consolidates the company’s strategy of heavily investing in Brazil, seen as one of the most promising markets for expanding its activities in South America.
Maintenance on Platforms Is the Focus of the Contract with Petrobras
The scope of the contract covers a series of essential services for the operation and safety of Petrobras’s offshore units. These include:
-
Oil fluctuates above $100 after meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping and progress in Middle East negotiations
-
OPEC reduces oil demand forecast for 2026, but bets on global market recovery in 2027
-
Braskem’s new generation tankers will cross over 5,500 nautical miles between the U.S. and Brazil, reduce CO₂ emissions by 30%, and transport naphtha with modern engines, an optimized hull, and a focus on at-sea efficiency on a strategic route.
-
Weatherford secures offshore contracts in Brazil through 2030 with operations in the Búzios field and Campos Basin.
- Installation of piping;
- Manufacturing and assembly of metal structures;
- Boiler services (such as opening and closing of vessels, filters, tanks, towers, and heat exchangers);
- Industrial painting;
- Scaffolding assembly;
- Electrical maintenance, instrumentation, and automation.
The hiring reinforces the trust relationship between the Brazilian state-owned company and Mota-Engil, which has already been providing services to Petrobras in previous years.
Now, the company significantly expands its role with one of the leading names in the offshore oil industry in Latin America.
Brazil Is a Strategic Bet for Mota-Engil
In an interview with Bloomberg News, Mota-Engil’s CEO, Carlos Mota Santos, stated that Brazil is currently one of the priorities of the Portuguese group:
“Brazil is a very strong bet for the group. It is a country with great growth potential in the oil and gas sectors and infrastructure. We are closely monitoring the opportunities there.”
The executive also highlighted Mota-Engil’s interest in participating in other major Brazilian projects, such as the submerged tunnel between Santos and Guarujá, on the coast of São Paulo — which has an estimated investment of R$ 6 billion and is considered the largest of its kind in South America.
“It seems like a very interesting project,” said Mota Santos.
In the first quarter of 2025, Mota-Engil’s project portfolio reached € 14.96 billion, with a quarter of that volume concentrated in South America.
Brazil, with its growing demand for infrastructure and energy, is at the center of this advancement.
In addition to operations in Brazil, Mota-Engil is also active in Mexico, where it is building a fertilizer plant worth US$ 1.2 billion for the state-owned Pemex. In Africa, the company maintains a strong presence in Angola, one of its most traditional markets.
Founded in 1946, Mota-Engil bets on market diversification and partnerships with giants like Petrobras to sustain its international expansion.
