In Decision, Minister Imposed Fine of R$ 500 Thousand and Stated That Even Though the Right to Strike Is Guaranteed by Law, “There Are Limits”
Minister Ives Gandra, from the Superior Labor Court (TST), understood that the Oil Workers’ Strike is illegal and ordered that 90% of the workers return to their duties at around 30 Petrobras units. The stoppage, which began this Saturday (01), already involves more than 17 thousand employees from the large state oil, gas, and oil company.

Half a Million Fine for Petrobras
In his ruling, Gandra set a daily fine of R$ 500 thousand for unions that do not resume their workforce. The decision was in response to Petrobras management, which filed a collective labor dispute this Monday (03) against the union leaders, claiming the strike was abusive.
In an interview with GGN this morning, the Permanent Negotiating Committee stated that the aim of the strike is not to harm the company’s activities or oil production, which they argue would affect the Brazilian population, but rather to secure collective labor agreements that Petrobras has not established since the closure of the Nitrogen Fertilizer Factory in Paraná (Fafen) and the thousands of layoffs anticipated.

The TST minister restricted the fine to unions in Northern Fluminense, Bahia, Espírito Santo, and the Unified Federation of Oil Workers (FUP). Other smaller unions would face a sanction of R$ 250 thousand if they do not comply with the end of the strike.
Oil Workers’ Strike
The oil workers’ strike that started on Saturday has not impacted the company’s production so far, and operations are continuing within safety standards, according to a statement from the company this Tuesday. The Unified Federation of Oil Workers (FUP), on the other hand, stated this Tuesday that the stoppage has the support of about 14,750 workers, or 80% of the total in the 12 states where the movements are taking place.
