Initiative Boosts Brazilian Shipbuilding Industry and Creates 180 Thousand Jobs

Petrobras announced an ambitious plan to hire 48 vessels with at least 40% local content by the end of 2026. With an investment of R$ 118 billion, the initiative aims to strengthen the Brazilian shipbuilding industry and create 180 thousand jobs.

Ship Contracts Strengthen National Industry

During the New Industry Brazil Forum, held on May 26, 2025, at the BNDES headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, the president of Petrobras, Magda Chambriard, detailed the company’s strategy. She emphasized the importance of the national industry being prepared to meet Petrobras’ demands, highlighting that support for the local industry is essential to increase refining capacity, resume fertilizer production, and expand gas supply.

Job Creation and Economic Development

The vessel hiring plan foresees the creation of 180 thousand job opportunities, boosting economic development and job generation in the country. Chambriard pointed out that the investment of R$ 118 billion will be directed to Brazil, reinforcing Petrobras’ commitment to the growth of the national economy.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

The president of Petrobras also highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. She mentioned that the company is dedicated to increasing the supply and reducing the price of natural gas, aiming to serve the market for chemical products, fertilizers, and petrochemicals. In addition, Petrobras plans to invest US$ 4.2 billion in research and development over the next five years, focusing on training qualified professionals and national reindustrialization.

Alignment with Government Policies

Petrobras’ initiative is thus aligned with the efforts of the federal government, which seeks to revitalize the shipbuilding industry and reindustrialize the country. In addition, the New Industry Brazil program, created by BNDES, aims to encourage innovation, promote sustainability, and ensure economic sovereignty. Thus, the proposal has the support of political leaders, influential businessmen, and union representatives, who together strengthen its implementation.

Perspectives for the Future

With the hiring of the 48 vessels, in addition to the planned investments, Petrobras aims to primarily strengthen its operation while also boosting the national industry. Thus, the state-owned company also contributes to job creation and, consequently, stimulates regional growth. Furthermore, it reinforces its commitment to sustainability and, ultimately, to innovation in the Brazilian energy sector.
