Oceanographer David Zee from Uerj Is Concerned About the Lack of Oil Containment Actions and Sees a High Chance of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro Being Affected.
Researchers from Coppe/UFRJ will investigate which areas of the country may be affected by oil that is spreading along the Northeast coast. Ibama Requested Clarifications from Shell About Oil Barrels Found on Beaches in Sergipe; the Material Found Inside the Barrels Is the Same Oil That Hit Northeastern Beaches in Recent Weeks.
Carina Bock, a researcher at the Computational Methods Laboratory at Coppe/UFRJ, informs “Considering the points where oil was located, an inverse modeling work was done. Based on hydrodynamic conditions, we calculated the oil’s trajectory back in time to try to find its source,”

Taller than the Statue of Liberty, thousands of wind turbines are being planted in the middle of U.S. fields, creating two-story farms where corn and soybeans grow below while the wind turns into electricity above.
With the aim of discovering where the oil may move, the next step will be to do the same modeling but forward. This will allow us to know, for example, if it will reach the State of Rio, in how much time, and potential entry points.
Oceanographer David Zee from Uerj is concerned about the lack of oil containment actions that extend from Maranhão to Northern Bahia and sees a high chance of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro being affected.
According to the oceanographer, in Rio de Janeiro, the entry would occur from the North of the state, in the municipalities of São Francisco de Itabapoana, Barra de São João, and Quissamã.
The State Institute of the Environment (Inea) and Ibama assured that no oil slick was identified offshore nor any tendency of displacement near the State of Rio. The agency reported that it has a contingency plan that covers the scenario of oil appearing on beaches and remains vigilant.

The Petrobras has completed one month of permanent support to Ibama in the efforts to clean beaches affected by oil in the Northeast. Since September 12, the company has collected more than 200 tons of oil (a mixture of oil and sand).
In total, Petrobras has mobilized about 1700 environmental agents to clean the impacted areas and more than 50 employees for planning and executing the response.
Five Environmental Defense Centers (CDA) and nine Emergency Response Centers were also activated. The CDAs are Petrobras facilities strategically distributed across various regions of the country to complement the oil spill emergency response resources of the company’s operational units.
In addition to the CDAs, each unit has equipment and resources for immediate response in its Emergency Response Centers. This structure ensures the timing, resources, and response capacity of the installations managed by the company.
