Piauí Will Receive New Green Hydrogen Plant Capable of Producing 10 GW. Project is Part of the European Union’s Billion-Dollar Investment in Brazil.
The European Union plans to financially support the construction of one of the largest green hydrogen plants in the world in the town of Parnaíba, in the state of Piauí. The announcement was made earlier this week by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
Green Hydrogen Plant Will Have a Capacity of 10 GW
According to Ursula Gertrud von der Leyen, support for the green hydrogen plant is part of a total investment of 2 billion euros, equivalent to about R$ 10.7 billion in direct conversion, in the green hydrogen economic chain in Brazil, under a plan called Global Gateway, aimed at ensuring energy supply for the European bloc.
According to Von der Leyen, in a video conference speech at the European Hydrogen Week, the new green hydrogen plant will have a production facility of 10 GW of clean hydrogen and ammonia. It is worth noting that green hydrogen gets its name because it is obtained through the use of clean energies, being one of the main bets for the energy transition.

The green hydrogen plant in Piauí will be constructed by the Croatian company Green Energy Park. The estimate is that construction will begin at the end of next year, with the first deliveries in 2027. The goal of the plant is to supply Europe, similar to previous investments announced in countries like Egypt, Namibia, and Kenya.
The project in Piauí was the first of the European initiative for Brazil. According to the President of the European Commission, the green hydrogen produced in Piauí will be exported in the form of ammonia to the island of Krk, in Croatia, from where it will go to industrial buyers in southeastern Europe.
First Hydrogen Buses Are Already Circulating in Europe
According to the Piauí government, the Green Energy Park Piauí will utilize the structure of the Luís Correia port, which is still under construction, for the transportation of green hydrogen, in the form of ammonia, via the Piauí Export Processing Zone (ZPE). In her speech, Ursula highlighted that the first hydrogen buses are already circulating in European cities, from Riga to Barcelona, just as the first airplane flew over Slovenia.
According to her, regarding the advancements in the production of the renewable energy source, construction has just begun on the Port of Rotterdam, to develop a hydrogen network extending over a thousand kilometers.
In addition to the closed initiative with the Brazilian government for green hydrogen, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke for about half an hour with the commission president about the progress of negotiations on the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. Brazil is presiding over Mercosur until December 7, and has been discussing the final points of the agreement between the two blocs with the EU.
Northeast Is in Focus for New Investments
In addition to the new green hydrogen plant in Piauí, the northeastern coast, stretching from Maranhão to Rio Grande do Norte, is on the radar of another investor.
In Ceará, Andrew Forrest, President of the Australian multinationalFortescue, plans to invest US$ 5 billion, equivalent to R$ 25 billion, in a green hydrogen project at the Port of Pecém. Forrest is investing in four more hydrogen plants in other countries.
According to Lula in a social media post, Forrest is enthusiastic about Brazil’s potential in renewable energy. According to the Governor of Ceará, Elmano Freitas, the state has four pre-contracts signed, one of which is with Fortescue.
