System Similar to the O500 Bus
The system that Tesla will place in its model is expected to be similar to that seen in the O500 bus from Mercedes-Benz that operates in SP. In the Mercedes-Benz buses, the rear axle is steerable and responds to the action of the steering wheel, just like the front axle, but in the opposite direction, helping to execute tighter turns.
In the case of the Mercedes-Benz buses operating in SP, the mechanism is basic: axle with articulated arms and an electronic sensor that works based on the impulse of the steering wheel turn and commands the hydraulic pump responsible for the movement of the wheel assembly.
Response to Competition
The system similar to the Mercedes-Benz buses operating in SP announced by Tesla is a response to the competition. Soon after the company announced the arrival of the electric pickup Cybertruck, competitors Rivian and GMC announced their pickups, also electric, R1T and Hummer EV, respectively.
The two companies came with a system of four-wheel steering, making Tesla’s initial design obsolete. Furthermore, the Hummer was presented with a technology known as “crab walk,” where all wheels can be turned in the same direction, allowing the vehicle to move at 90 degrees.
The Rivian model, on the other hand, has electric motors in each of the four wheels, allowing the pickup’s wheels to turn independently, changing direction without moving from its spot.
