Recognition announced by MDIC places the instant payment system created by the Central Bank in a new stage of legal protection in Brazil.
The Pix will be recognized as a well-known brand by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), as announced this Wednesday, June 10, by the Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Márcio Elias Rosa.
The decision makes the instant payment system created by the Central Bank the first brand linked to the Federal Government to achieve this status. The announcement took place in Brasília, during a meeting of the Sustainable Economic and Social Development Council, known as Conselhão.
According to the minister, the recognition represents the highest level of protection possible for a brand under Brazilian legislation. “In the form of the Industrial Property Law, it is the greatest protection that can be granted to a brand,” said Márcio Elias Rosa.

Pix will have expanded protection in all branches of the economy
Recognition as a well-known brand guarantees Pix protection that goes beyond its original segment of operation. In this way, the brand becomes protected in all branches of economic activity, as provided for in article 125 of Law No. 9,279/1996.
In practice, this means that the protection is no longer limited to the class of products or services in which the brand was originally registered. Therefore, the name Pix now has expanded protection, regardless of the economic sector involved.
Well-known brands are those widely recognized by the population and that accumulate reputation, prestige, and trust over time. Additionally, they go beyond the limits of their own segment and receive special treatment by legislation.
Recognition reinforces the prestige and trust of the Pix brand
Created by the Central Bank, Pix has established itself as one of the main instant payment methods in Brazil. Now, with recognition by INPI, the brand receives broader legal protection.
This type of protection is granted to brands that achieve great public recognition. Furthermore, the well-known status reinforces the relevance of Pix as a brand associated with trust, widespread use, and national identification.
The announcement made by the MDIC also highlights the institutional nature of the decision. After all, this will be the first brand linked to the Federal Government to be officially recognized as a well-known brand.
Official publication will be made in the Industrial Property Magazine
The formalization of the recognition will be published next Tuesday, June 16, in the Industrial Property Magazine (RPI). The vehicle is used by INPI to officially disclose its decisions.
With the publication, the recognition will be included in the institute’s official records. Thus, the special protection provided for in the Industrial Property Law will be applied to the Pix brand.
