Monumental Bridge of R$ 233 Million That Promises to Revolutionize Transportation Between Tocantins and Pará Is Almost Ready. However, One Surprise: The Essential Accesses for Its Use Are Still Under Construction and Will Only Be Completed in 2025. Discover the Details of This Work That, Even Imposing, Cannot Yet Be Fully Utilized.
In the heart of Brazil, where the Araguaia River traces the natural border between Tocantins and Pará, a grand engineering structure promises to transform logistics and regional development.
The bridge that connects the municipalities of Xambioá (TO) and São Geraldo do Araguaia (PA) emerges as a milestone of progress and national integration.
After years of planning and execution, the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) announced that the bridge over the Araguaia River is 99% completed.

The labor shortage has changed its face in Brazil: companies hire 80% more, but workers stay only 6.8 months in the job, the service market becomes a “revolving door,” and businesses spend increasingly more to train teams that soon leave.

A man takes a simple farm cattle trough and transforms it into a fully motorized boat by lining the tank with plywood, sealing everything with epoxy, and installing an outboard motor.

Chinese giant chooses SC to set up its first factory in Brazil, investing R$ 250 million and producing MRI machines costing R$ 10 million each, with 100 direct jobs and 5% of revenue allocated to research.

After selling a unit for R$ 115 million to pay off debts, a traditional factory in SC founded in 1932 has a new R$ 64.8 million plan denied by the court and retains about 690 workers in Joinville.
The expectation is that the structure will be fully completed in September 2024, with clearance for traffic estimated for November of the same year.
However, the accesses to the bridge are still under construction, with completion expected in July 2025.
A Major Undertaking
With a total length of 1,724 meters, the bridge over the Araguaia River is one of the largest in the country.
Its platform is 12 meters wide, accommodating a lane, shoulder, and sidewalks of 1.5 meters on each side, ensuring safety for pedestrians and drivers.
The construction of the bridge is part of a larger project to modernize BR-153, known as the “Belém-Brasília Highway.”
The highway is one of the most important axes for the flow of agricultural products in Brazil and the integration between the North, Northeast, and Central-West regions.
Currently, crossing the Araguaia River is done by ferries, which limits transportation efficiency.
Economic Impact and Production Flow
The bridge over the Araguaia River will bring positive impacts to the regional and national economy.
Currently, rural producers and transport companies face difficulties in transporting their goods due to the need to cross the river by ferries, which generates additional costs and increases travel time.
With the new structure, a significant reduction in travel time and logistics costs is expected.
The project also aims to strengthen the road infrastructure of the region known as Matopiba, which includes the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia.
This is one of Brazil’s main agricultural frontiers, with strong production of grains such as soy and corn. The improvement in transportation will facilitate the flow of goods to ports and consumer centers.
Challenges with Access and Pending Compensation
Despite the progress of the main work, the accesses to the bridge still face challenges. DNIT reported that the access works, totaling 2,010 meters in length, are underway, with an expected completion in July 2025.
In addition, there are pending issues related to compensation for landowners in the affected areas. Conciliation hearings are scheduled for February 2025 in Federal Court to resolve these matters.
Investment and History of the Bridge Project
The total investment in the construction of the bridge and its accesses is approximately R$ 233 million.
The initial contract was signed in 2017, during Michel Temer’s government, with an expected start of works in 2018 and completion in three years.
However, legal disputes delayed the start of the construction, which only effectively began in 2020. Since then, the project has undergone budget and schedule revisions.
Expected Benefits for the Region
The completion of the bridge over the Araguaia River will directly benefit over 1.5 million people.
In addition to facilitating cargo transportation, the structure will promote integration between the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, fostering economic and social development.
The expectation is that daily traffic on the highway, currently around 1,500 vehicles, will increase significantly after the inauguration of the bridge.
Future Perspectives for the Bridge
With the completion of the works approaching, the local population eagerly awaits the benefits that the new bridge will bring.
The logistic integration provided by the structure promises to transform the economic dynamics of the region, attracting investments and improving the quality of life for its inhabitants.
The bridge over the Araguaia River represents a milestone in Brazil’s transport infrastructure. Despite the challenges faced throughout its construction, the work is about to become a reality, bringing with it the promise of development and progress for the regions it connects.
